NOTE

Pre Civil Registrations are not the original parish records. In the 1930s-1940s, Sir J. C. Puddester, the Commissioner of the Department of Public Health and Welfare, expressed concerned about the fragile condition of many of the pre 1891 parish records that were still in existence in the province. (Civil Registration did not begin until 1891-92).

Consequently, Government began a program encouraging churches to transcribe these older entries by offering clergy ten cents a name for the submission of their baptism and marriage records. For this reason, Pre Civil Vital Statistics information can only be as accurate as was interpreted by those particular transcribers.
