GRANTS INDEX LEASES OF CROWN LANDS 1803 TO 1804
				NOTE: Entries in the following format refer to entries entered in pen at a later date. They were not typed entries on the original pages. [*..................................] The entry of (sic) Identifies an entry that may appear to be be incorrect but was transcribed as it was typed on the original pages.
		NOTE, Only the first lease for each year is written in full on the Register (Volume A), each other lease for the year makes reference to the first lease and states it is the same tenor mutatis muntandis. Locations and any other data concerned solely with individual leases are given in full.
				GENERAL REMARKS,
Volume A is the oldest register of land titles at the Department of Natural Resources. The existence of this record has been lost sight of for more than a generation until it was discovered by chance in 1935. The contents deal with lease and rental titles, mostly in and around St. John's, issued during the first three decades of the last centuary. For the purpose of easier reference to those old titles an abstract of the volume has been prepared and will be found on the pages that follow.
The pages of volume A were not numbered when it was in use as a grant register over a hundred years ago; in compiling the abstract it was found necessary to write page numbers on the used portions of the book. The usual procedure was followed by paging with Roman numerals on the index portion and ordinary numbers on the other section of the book. Page letters and figures are written in red.

	From page 176 onward there were 110 blank leaves which have been removed in rebinding the book. Inside the last cover on a section of thirty-four pages there is a register of fifteen deeds of lands given in compensation to parties who surrendered portions of their waterside premises to provide a right of way for a new road at the rear of the flakes along the Harbour of St. John's.

	NOTE:
	In the year of 1805 Crown leases were issued simiar to those issued in the years 1803 & 1804. The 1805 leases were not registered in Volume A but were entered in the Alphabetical Index of the book with those of the two preceeding years. The absence of a location or place column in the Alphabetical index of Volume A causes the situation of location of the lands of the unregistered 1805 leases to be unrecorded. Indications point to the general location of the whole body of the 1805 leases to have been in and around the town of St. John's.

	This is a list of Rental Titles issued in 1813 and onward for several years. It is compiled from Volume A in which the titles are listed on and between pages 110 and 167. It is apparent that in those days plots of land in and near St. John's were marked by one or more distinctive letters; by single letters until the alphabet was exausted which would make the number of marked plots twenty-six, then by combinations of two letters which, when all possible combinations were exhausted, would add twenty-six times twenty-six to the number of plots marked, thus making a total of seven hundred and two lots marked by this method. The letters marked on the plots were quoted in the title deeds when the lots were rented, leased, or granted by the Crown and when transfers of lands so marked were made between individuals. The titles registered in Volume A do not reach seven hundred and two in number, therefore there is no evidence that this system of marking went into combinations of three letters.
	The titles appearing in the following pages are not registered in full in Volume A. They appear in index form following out the order of the letters by which the plots were marked on the ground. The autograph signature of the Grantee and the signature of the witness to the deed appear in Volume A in columns ruled off for the purpose.
	While Volume A was in use the system of land and the title identification by letters had begun to be displaced by using figures instead, an alphabetical list of the holders of Volume A titles separately bound was found inserted in Volume A and contains many titles issued during the same period which are numbered by figures. This alphabetical list was in such a dilapidated state as to be of little use for reference purposes, it is therefore replaced by the following alphabetical arrangement of the Grantees names. The numbered titles just referred to are given in a list which follows the lettered titles.
