Pte George Augustus Brocklehurst Regt # 848

George Augustus Brocklehurst was born 14 July 1887, the sixth son of Charles and Mary Ann Brocklehurst. George is listed in the 1913 census as an Assistant messenger ( Letter Carrier) with the Colonial Secretary's Office. He joined the Newfoundland regiment, # 848, on 30 Decmebr 1914 in St. John's.
He was described as single, 5' 7" tall, 122 pounds, chest size 29-32 in, dark complexion, dark hair and light blue eyes, and having a small scar in the center of his forehead. He was listed as living with his father, C.F. Brocklehurst at 21 Maxse Street.

Entrained for Cairo 31 August 1915 and embarked for Gallipoli 13 Sept 1915, landed Suvla Bay night of 19-20 Sept
evacuated and enbarked Alexandria 15 Jan 16
Embarked Suez on 16 Jan 16, proceeded to Port of Suez 14 March 1916
Disembarked Marseillais 22 Mar 1916
Admitted 88TA TB Lungs 5 June 1916 and invalided to England 14 June 16
Admitted Wentworth 15 June 16 furlough then attached to depot 10 Aug 1916
Embarked Southampton 30 Dec 16
Disembarked Rouen 31 Dec 16 joined Battalion 1 Jan 17, Ninth Battalion 23 Jan 17
Admitted 53 FA, 21 Jan 17
Discharged to duty 4 Feb 17
Rejoined Battalion 7 June 17
Killed in action on 18 Aug 17
His service record was 2 years and 230 days.

George was the brother of John Thomas Brocklehurst, Samuel Stephen Brocklehurst and Edward Stanislaus Brocklehurst.

The brothers also had a first-cousin, George Joseph Brocklehurst, born in May 1879 at Carbonear, who enlisted at Montreal in the CEF on 4 October 1916 ( their cousin George also had a brother-in-law, Leonard P Burke, who married his sister Adelaide, and who was Lt.Col. in the First Nfld Regiment).
