Edward Stanislaus Brocklehurst was born in May of 1890 in St.John's,
the seventh and youngest son of Charles Frederick Brocklehurst and Mary
Ann Dunn. He had two younger sisters, Kit and Lillian, and one older
sister, Mary Jane, who died of scarletina at age eleven. Edward travelled
to Glace Bay at age 18 in 1908 and worked as a Steelworker there with
several of his brothers for about 8 months. When the war broke out, he enlisted at St.John's on 13 April 1916 in the First Newfoundland Regiment # 2519. His age was listed as 24( sic 26), marital status as single, grey eyes, brown hair, occupation Steelworker and residence 21 Maxse Street, St.John's. He embarked at St.John's via SS Sylvia for the UK on 16 July 1916 Edward was the brother of John Thomas Brocklehurst, Samuel Stephen Brocklehurst and George Augustus Brocklehurst. The brothers also had a first-cousin, George Joseph Brocklehurst, born in May 1879 at Carbonear, who enlisted at Montreal in the CEF on 4 October 1916 ( their cousin George also had a brother-in-law, Leonard P Burke, who married his sister Adelaide, and who was Lt.Col. in the First Nfld Regiment). |
