Henry Gordon Brinston, Service # 208838 , Royal Navy ~ 8th Contingent, H.M.S. Exeter

Mike Fleming was killed on board HMS Exeter on March 1, 1942 in what has been referred to as the "Battle of Java Sea". HMS Exeter was part of the joint ABDA Combined Striking Force of ships from Britain, Australia, the US and Netherlands against a large Japanese force consisting of two heavy cruisers, two light cruisers and numerous destroyers. The Japanese also had air cover provided by land bases in Java. If my research is correct, uncle Mike was in one of the forward turrets when a Japanese 8 inch shell pierced the armor. Mike's leg was lost and he bled out before his mates could get him to the infirmary.
