Robert Clarence Elkins |
Robert Clarence ELKINS, Regimental # 970496, 166th [Newfoundland] Field Regiment R.A.
Born 13 July 1919, Safe Harbour, Bonavista North First son of Abram and Jane (nee ROBERTS) ELKINS In 2000, I talked with my uncle about his service during WW2. He told me he rarely has spoken about it, so I was honoured to have had the conversation. With his permission, what follows is some of the information he told me that day. Robert was first stationed in Sussex on Sir Malcolm Campbell's Estate. From there he went to Croyden, London as a lands bombardier, then on to Norfolk, where he was stationed on the grounds of Sandringham Palace. He went to Africa (Tunisia, Algeria, Morocco) as a land sergeant. His regiment then moved on into Sicily and entered the mainland of Italy through the city of Toranto. He was at the Sango River when the war ended. Rob met his future wife, Beatrice Susanna (daughter of Isabella and George Harvey, of Sauchie Alloa, Clackmannishire, Scotland) in Glasgow, where she was working with the Paton Wool Company, knitting sweaters to verify that the patterns were correctly written. When they met, she was about to leave for training to become an inspector of aircraft parts. They were married in Lesmagow, Scotland, and as Robert relates, that made him the first in his regiment to be married overseas. As a war bride, Beatrice (1921-1990) came to Canada on the R.M.S. Scythia in 1946. Two articles in the Daily News March 26 and 28, 1946 report on the arrival of over 300 wives and about 160 children who made this same journey to Newfoundland. |
