The War Dead of the Beaumont-Hamel War Memorial
The Newfoundland Mercantile Marine
| From 1914-1918, 209 merchant vessels registered in Newfoundland,
with a tonnage of 39, 918 tons and a personnel of about 1,500, who were
engaged in the carrying trade of the Commonwealth and exposed to all risks
of War. Seventy-two of these [13,990 tons and approx 600 men] were lost.
There are 18 vessels carrying 114 men who are named in this section. Sixteen
of them were schooners.
The four vessels that carried 73 of the 114 men whose names appear in this section of the Register were:
S.S. "Beverley" was sunk between Harbour Grace and Gibraltar on 21 Jan 1918 [24 names]. Barquentine "Lake Simcoe" was submarined between Naples and St. John's, 1915. The ships were all lost by enemy action, and the men have no grave but the sea. And for those reasons the names appear with the same honour that is given to sailors and soldiers. |
