Pte Frederick Augustine Rose

Frederick Augustine ROSE was born 16 May 1897 of William & Mary (nee Quigley) Rose in St. John's, Newfoundland.
His parents owned a small farm, which was confiscated by the Smallwood Government to build the Confederation Building.

Fred married Ellen Breen who remained in Newfoundland with their two small children. Fred went to Iroquois Falls, Northern Ontario, to work as a butcher.
He joined the Canadian Army while working there. His Regiment Number was 1007041. Fred fought in the Battle of Amiens and The Battle Of Arras.
He was killed on 3 Sept 1918 near the end of the Battle of Arras.

On 3 Sept 1918 the Fourth Canadian Division liberated the villages of Rumaucourt, Ecort St. Quentin, Soudemont, and Recourt.
He was likely killed near one of those villages. His name is on the Vimy Ridge Monument.
Fred’s son William Rose served with the Newfoundland Forestry Division in Scotland during WWII.
