Herbert Redvers Pitcher[standing]

Frederick Charles Pitcher was born 16 October 1880, son of Jonathon Pitcher of Old Bonaventure and Miriam Churchill of Portugal Cove. He was baptized in St. John's at the Church of England Cathedral.
Frederick joined the Royal Newfoundland Regiment in 1916 and was assigned Regimental # 3348. He went to France and was wounded at the Battle of Steenburg [?] on 16 Aug 1917. He carried a piece of shrapnel in his shoulder the rest of his life. He was in hospital again in July of 1918 and returned home in December of 1918. He also fought in the Boer War in Africa.
Frederick married Isabella Cross and had children but they all died young. He lived in the house his father built at # 8 Central Street and later with his sister, Jeannette/ Janet [ Mrs. Arch Winsor at #10 Central Street, St. John's].

In the late 1950's his health declined and he went to Lancaster Hospital in New Brunswick for the Veterans and died there on the 12 September 1960. [See headstone]

He was always a well dressed person wearing a suit with vest whenever I saw him.

Another brother James Pitcher also enlisted but was rejected at the time due to sickness.

Frederick Pitcher is standing in the back row in the left corner. As far as I know this is at Ayr, Scotland.

Frederick Pitcher is the third from the left in the front row. As far as I know this is at Ayr, Scotland.
