Stephen J. Paul was born on November 24th, 1894 in Wigwam Point, Newfoundland. He was the son of Benjamin and Mary Paul (Nee Stuckless). Stephen J. Paul enlisted in the Royal Newfoundland at age 21 on March 27th, 1916. His younger brother Lawrence Paul also enlisted in Royal Newfoundland Regiment in 1916.

Stephen embarked from St. John’s for overseas on the S.S Sicilian on July 19th, 1916. He was admitted to Heathfield Hospital in South Ayrshire on September 27th, 1916 and was discharged on November 10, 1916. Stephen was then admitted to the Glenafton Sanatorium in New Cumnock, Scotland where he later died of tuberculosis on March 20th, 1917. He is buried at Ayr Cemetery in Scotland.
