Henry Gillingham

Born in 1895 - Died in July 23, 1957. Buried in Jackson's Arm St. Bartholomew Anglican Church Cemetery
Raised in Harbour Deep, White Bay.
Enlisted in Newfoundland Regiment August 5, 1916
21 Years old
5 ft 6 ins
Weight 114 lbs. Note by recruiting officer indicated that he needed to gain some weight.
Assigned to 1st Battalion of Newfoundland Regiment and attached to 2nd battalion on Sept. 14, 1918.
Served in France and Belgium .
Was wounded in action Cambria (Flanders) and was admitted to 3rd London General Hospital (Wandsworth) Dec. 19, 1917 spent 91 days in hospital.
Wounded in Left leg and right arm.
Was send to Eastbourne March 3, 1918 and spent 56 days in hospital.
Was Demobilized and deemed physically unfit on account of wound received in Action
Discharge approved Dec. 20, 1918
On Dec. 27, 1918 he advised the Civil Re-Establishment committee that he decided to go back home to Harbour Deep, White Bay to work at fishing.
Confirmation of Discharge Jan. 16, 1919
He returned to White Bay and married Susannah Davis of Jackson’s Arm, White Bay where he lived as a fisherman until he died.
They had 6 children, 3 Boys Harvey, Gerald and Gordon and 3 girls Lillian, Ethel and Emily.
