Regimental # 4561

Donated by Mary Duggan

Edward was from Harbour Main, the son of Peter and Sarah Costello.
On April 22, 1918, at the age of 21, Edward Costello enlisted in the 2nd. Battalion of the Royal Newfoundland Regiment as a Private. He was assigned Regimental # 4561.
He was stationed at Hazley Down Military Camp in Winchester, England. This was one of the areas where the British Army trained its young soldiers who would be fighting in various areas of Europe. Edward served a total of 222 days as he became ill while overseas and had to return home. After he returned home, the war finally had ended. Edward then commenced to work at Bell Island where he worked as a miner for 40 years.
