Francis joined the Royal Newfoundland Regiment and was assigned Regt # 4022. His brother, Gerald Guy Byrne, was one of the Original First Five Hundred. They both lived in St John's with their parents. Gerald went on to be a Captain with some note worthy engagements and Francis was a Sergeant.

Some time after his discharge Francis came to New York and met my Grandmother, Josephine M. Johnson.
They got married and had 3 children; Francis Jr., Catherine, and my Dad, Robert Guy.

From what Mom tells me, they lost Francis Jr. to a sickness several days after some older boys beat him up and threw him into a pond. Francis Jr. was only seven years old. Not much longer after that Francis Sr. signed himself into a mental hospital in Westchester N.Y.
I think Creedmoore. And that is where he stayed until he passed away in 1966.

I think the stress of the war and losing his son took its toll on him. My Dad was about 5 yrs old when Francis left and never talked about him. Mom says he really didn't know Francis but did go to see him when he was seventeen. Dad never talked about that visit.
