Pte Orlando Brown and Pte Israel Bannister
Royal Newfoundland Regiment
WW I
~
Donated by Domino Howse

I found a Post Card in my Mother-in-Law's old Photograph Album, identifying two recruits from WW 1.

1. # 2670, Pte. Orlendo Brown of Trinity East, who is listed as "killed in action" Feb 25, 1917.

2. # 2812, Pte Israel Bannister, also from the Trinity area, and noted that he was "Prisoner in Germany", but no date (s) given.

Basic training at Pleasantville did not provide recruits with a barracks for board and lodgings. Citizens around the City of St. John's received a small monthly allowance, to provide such for recruits from outside the City, while they received their basic training, before being shipped overseas.

Mrs. Sarah Reid, my wife's grandmother, was a widow with four school age girls at the time, living at #1 Monroe St. [The house is still standing there]. Mrs. Reid found this to be helpful in putting food on the table, and had several recruits during their basic training, prior to shipping overseas.
