Henry Bertram Bastow, teamster, attested with the First Newfoundland Regiment in St. John's January 29, 1915. He was 19 years old and 5 feet 8 inches tall and his distinguishing mark was a 2 inch scar on his left forearm. His regimental number was 1016. His service record indicates he embarked on the SS Stephano April 22, 1915. Embarked MEF Aug 20. Disembarked Alexandria and entrained for Cairo Aug. 31. Embarked for Gallipoli Sep. 13. Landed Suvla Bay night of 19-20. Admitted 15 SH Mudros E. Dec. 8. frostbite both feet. ????????? depot Jan 17, 1916. Invalided to England HS Britannic Mar. 1. Admitted to Lord Derby War Hospital Warrington Jan 10. Furlough Apr. 26 then attached depot May 5. First Newfoundland for discharge Jun 15, 1917. Arrived headquarters Newfoundland July 2. Discharged medically unfit Oct 6. 1917. Henry was the brother of Frederick Donald Bastow. |
