Joseph was born Nov 08, 1895. Son of James Barrett (1857 - 1925) and Eliza Badcock (1854 - 1901). His siblings were Lillian (1885 - 1953), Mary (1893 - 1981), Moses (1888 - 1917) [spouse Margaret Earle [1893-?] and Herbert (1889 - 1915).
He married Florence Dawe (1893 - 1969) and they had 3 daughters: Mary, Lillian, and Winnie.

Joseph worked with his Father, fishing and farming, may have worked on Railway Contruction in Newfoundland. Possible General Labourer, Carpenter.
He served in the Newfoundland Royal Naval Reserve, stationed on the HMS Calypso in St. John's. Assigned # 4648X from Nov 12, 1914 - Dec 17, 1914 [19 yrs old]

Dec 18, 1914 - Apr 07, 1915, he served as a one year volunteer in the British Royal Navy in WW I as an Able Seaman and was assigned # 1353X. He served for 17 months. He departed St. John's on Dec 18, 1914 and arrived Plymouth Port, U.K. He was stationed at HMS Vivid Naval Training Barracks in Davonport, Plymouth, U.K. from Dec 18, 1914 - Feb 02, 1915.

Feb 03, 1915 - Mar 01, 1915: HMS Prince George arrived and was stationed at its Home Base in the Port of Tenedos [Bozcaada] an Island off Turkey in the Aegean Sea.

Mar 01, 1915 - Feb 09, 1916: HMS Prince George was used to transport supplies, soldiers and the landing and evacuation of ground troops. It was also used as a Gunner and as a "mine bumper".

Mar 05 and 18: Attacks on Ottoman Turkish Forts:

Apr 1915: In the seas during the Campaign of the Dardanelles and Gallipoli. Sent to protect the landings in Gallipoli.

Apr 1915: The Prince George was placed in the mouth of the Straits with orders to target Turkish Gun Batteries on the Asiatic Shores.

May 03, 1915: The Ship was hit below the waterline, causing a 6 inch rupture. Returning to Malta for repairs.

Jul 12, 1915: Back in action, supporting French troops with gunfire off Krithia and Achi Baba, Turkey.

Dec 18-19: Taking part in the evacuation of troops in Suvla Bay, Turkey.

Jan 08, 1916: Back at the Dandanelles to take part in the evacuation of troops on the West Beach, Suvla, Turkey.

Jan 09, 1916: Evacuation of troops from Cape Helles Bay, Turkey. Ship was hit by a torpedo off Cape Helles. The torepedo failed to explode and the Prince George suffered no damage.

Jan-Feb 1916: At Salonika, Serbia in the Agean Sea.

Feb 1916: HMS Prince George departs the Mediterranean for U.K.

Mar 1916: Ship is resting at the Chatham Dockyard in U.K.

Mar 10, 1916 - Mar ?, 1916: Stationed at the HMS Pembroke Naval Barracks, Chatham, U.K.

Mar, 1916: Joseph departs U.K. for Canada [Ship unknown].

Mar 26, 1916: Josehp arrived in St. John's.

Mar 26 1916 - Apr 07, 1916: Stationed on the HMS Briton in St. John's to complete service.

Apr 07, 1916: Joseph Barrett returned to be with his Father in Bay Roberts, NL.

June 05, 1917: Draft Registration Card dated for Joseph Barrett, aged 22, in Everett Massachusetts, as an alien working as a carptenter's helper at C.A. Dodge Co.

1919: Joseph, aged 24, was living in Wabana, on Bell Island, working as a miner for Dominion Iron and Steel Co. Ltd [DISCO].

1921 Census: Joseph, aged 25, is listed as liviing in Bay Roberts with his Father. Occupation is listed as Merchant/Private Income. Noted that there was a small shop located on Menchions Lane. Run by the Barrett Family.

War Medals include: 1914-1918 Star; British War Medal and the Victory Medal [Inter-Alied War Medal]
