BAY OF ISLAND, situated 55 miles north from St. George's Bay, is on the western or treaty coast of Newfoundland, where the French have concurrent right of fishing with the local population. The Bay is noted for its magnificent scenery, the entrance, some 15 miles wide, is studded with lofty inlands. The Blomidon hills on the east reach a height of 1500 feet. Several arms of the sea branch from the bay, the most important of which is the Humber Arm, Middle and North Arm, the former, 28 miles in length, receiving at its head the Humber River, one of the most important in Newfoundland. The banks of the arm are well timbered and some large mills do a fine business. Immense quantities of gypsum, limestone and marble are found in the vicinity and there are indication of lead, copper and other minerals. Coal exists a few miles in from the Humber.
