This information was transcribed from a census taken in 1836. It was the first census taken after the introduction of Representative Government, which was established in Newfoundland in 1832. The census covered nine districts on the English Shore i.e. the island's east, south, and north-east coasts, where the vast majority of the island's population lived. It excluded Labrador, and the French Shore (where permanent settlement was not officially allowed), and sparsely populated interior regions. The population of Newfoundland for 1836, within the nine designated districts was enumerated as being 75,843. For an overview of the population for each district and overall statistics, see 1836 Census Totals for Newfoundland. |
