Will of Mary Whitten
from Newfoundland will books volume 6 pages 182-183 probate year 1894

Last Will and Testament of
Mary Whitten of Harbor Grace
widow deceased.

      This is the last will and Testament of me Mary Whitten being of sound mind, memory and understanding.
Firstly I give and bequeath to my brothers Edward James and Thomas Sheehan and my sister Ellen Gaul four hundred dollars each.
Secondly I give and bequeath to my niece Martha Sheehan two hundred dollars. To Bride Hogan daughter of John Hogan two hundred dollars
Thirdly I give and bequeath to His Lordship the Most Revd Dr. McDonald the sum of two hundred dollars for benevolent purposes to be distributed as his Lordship may dispose.
Fourthly. I give and bequeath to Father Battcock, Father March, Father Rowe and Monsignor Walsh one hundred dollars each. I give and bequeath Four hundred dollars to His Lordship Most Revd Dr. McDonald to be appropriated to the erection of an alter in the Cathedral Harbor Grace. I furthermore give and bequeath to Father Francis Ryan Jesuit one hundred dollars. This legacy is given for the especial purpose of Masses to be celebrated for the repose of the souls of my parents Edward and Martha Sheehan. The legacies hereinbefore granted to the several priests are for the special purposes of Masses to be celebrated for the repose of my soul.

  • I hereby give and bequeath one hundred dollars to Mrs Ann Whitten the mother of my late husband George if living at the time of my death and if not then to his two daughters Jane and Clara share and share alike.
  • I hereby give and bequeath to his Lordship the Most Revd. Dr. McDonald the sum of one hundred dollars for the purpose of Five High Requiem Masses for the repose of my soul, one mass in each year for five years.
  • I give and bequeath to my sister Mrs Gaul all my household furniture and all my Stock Book debts and everything else of which I may be possessed at the time of my death.
  • I give and bequeath to the Society of St. Vincent de Paul Harbor Grace one hundred dollars.
  • I give and bequeath to the Presentation Convent Harbor Grace and Carbonear fifty dollars each.
  • I also give and bequeath to Monsignor Walsh the sum of one hundred dollars to be divided between the new church and the Nuns of Brigus equally.
  • I hereby give and bequeath to Dr. William Hogan the sum of one hundred dollars.

Lastly I hereby appoint Dr. William Hogan my sole executor. In witness whereof I have subscribed my hand this seventeenth day of April in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety four. (Sgd) Mary Whitten. Codicil.

I hereby make and ordain the following alterations as a codicil to my last will and Testament hereinbefore mentioned dated the 17th day of April last past. I hereby revoke the bequest made therein of Two hundred dollars in favour of Rose Hogan daughter of John Hogan and in lieu thereof I give and bequeath her the said Rose Hogan the sum of one hundred dollars. I also give and bequeath to my niece Martha Sheehan the sum of Two hundred dollars in addition to the aforesaid bequest of Two hundred dollars named in my said last will and Testament In witness whereof I have subscribed and set my hand this first day of June in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety four. (Sgd) Mary Whitten. Signed in presence of (sgd) Patrick Farrell. (Sgd) Thomas F. Walsh.

      I certify the foregoing to be a correct copy of the last will and Testament and Codicil of Mary Whitten deceased
