Last will and testament of
William Whelan of Carbonear

In the name of God Amen
The 15th day of September 1892. I William Whelan of Carbonear Fisherman, being very sick and weak of body but of perfect mind and memory thanks be given unto God, therefore calling unto mind the mortality of the body, knowing that it is appointed unto all men once to die, do make and ordain this my last will and testament: that is to say principally and first of all I give and recommend my soul into the hands of Almighty God that gave it and my body I recommend to the earth to be buried in decent Christian burial at the discretion of my executors nothing doubting but at the general resurrection I shall receive the same again by the Almighty power of God and as touching such worldly estate wherewith it hath pleased God to bless me in this life I give devise and dispose of the same in the following manner and form.
First I give and bequeath to Margaret my dearly beloved niece the sum of two hundred dollars of lawful money of Newfoundland to paid her when she becomes twenty one years old. I also give and bequeath to my well beloved nephew Stephen Whelan the sum of two hundred dollars of lawful money of Newfoundland to be paid him by my executors hereinafter named when demanded. I also leave my house and lands to be rented, the rent to be given for masses for my father, mother and myself until my well beloved niece Annie gets married or becomes twenty one years of age when it shall be given to her as her property by my executors. Also I give to my well beloved brother Edward the sum of eighty dollars to be paid him out of money now to my credit in the Savings Bank of Harbour Grace. Also I leave to my executors the sum of forty dollars to be given for two high masses for the repose of my soul. Also I leave to my executors the sum of eighty dollars to erect two headstones, one to my mother the other to myself. Also I give to Mary Delany the sum of forty dollars of lawful money of Newfoundland with one box and one couch to be delivered to her by my executors when called for. Also I give to Michael Joy my suit of black cloth, clothes to be delivered to him by my executors. Also I leave in the savings Bank of Harbour Grace the sum of two hundred and eighty dollars with the years interest to bear my expenses the remainder to be equally divided between my two brothers John & Edward. Also I give and bequeath to my well beloved brother John Whelan the sum of eighty dollars whom I likewise with my brother Edward Whelan constitute make and ordain my executors of this my last will and testament. And I do hereby utterly disallow all and every other former testaments wills, legacies, bequests and executors by me in any ways before named willed and bequeathed, ratifying and confirming this and no other to be my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand and seal the day and year above written (sgd) William X Whelan.
