IN RE.                DECEASED

ROBERT WATSON

THIS IS THE LAST WILL AND TESTAMENT OF ME ROBERT WATSON OF ST JOHN'S IN THE ISLAND OF NEWFOUNDLAND, CASHIER OF THE NEWFOUNDLAND SAVINGS BANK.
(1)      I hereby revoke all former wills by me heretofore at any time made.
(2)      I appoint my brother RICHARD FURNEAUX WATSON, my cousin, ELLIS DUNRICH WATSON, and the EASTERN TRUST COMPANY, to be the executors of this my last will and testament.
(3)      I direct that all my funeral expenses be paid out of my estate, and that my body be buried in the plot of ground owned by me in the Church of England cemetery at St John's aforesaid next to the grave of my late wife DORA MELVILLE WATSON. In the event of my death taking place while I am absent from Newfoundland I direct that if possible my body be brought here and interred as stated. I also direct that the headstone now at the grave of my wife be removed and that a new stone, of white marble, recording the names of my wife and myself be erected, the headstone to be imported from England and to be according to a design to be furnished by my friend FREDERICK LESLIE MARRIOTT, late Secretary of the Art Union of London, England, the first cost of which is not to exceed one hundred pounds sterling. I further direct that the sum of Ten pounds sterling be paid the said FREDERICK LESLIE MARRIOTT for his services in connection therewith.
(4).      I bequeath the following legacies, that is to say;
(a)      To my brother, Richard Furneaux, the sum of Five thousand dollars.
(b)      To KATE WATSON, wife of my brother, the sum of one thousand dollars.
(c)      To KATHARYN ALVORD, DORA MELVILLE WATSON, and ANNIE FURNEAUX WATSON, daughters of my brother, the sum of one thousand dollars each.
(d)      To my cousin, WILLIAM WILLS WATSON, and to REBECAA, his wife, the sum of one thousand dollars each.
(e)      To my cousin, ELLIS DUNRICH WATSON, and to CHRISTINA, his wife the sum of one thousand dollars each.
(f)      To my godson, John Bryett Watson, and to his brother James Harvey Watson, the sum of Five hundred dollars each.
(g)      To Dane Margaret Davidson D.B.E. (or in the event of her predeceasing me, to her daughters DIANA and DAPHINE in equal shares), the sum of Five hundred pounds sterling. This bequest is in recognition of the great kindness I have received at the hands of Dane Margaret and her husband the late Sir WALTER EDWARD DAVIDSON, K.C.M.G.
(h)      To my godson, CLIFFORD TRANFIELD, son of CHARLES H. TRANFIELD, J.P., Hearts Content, the sum of Two hundred dollars.
(i)      To my godson ERIC HAMMOND WOODWARD, son of the REVEREND HENRY KILNER (?) WOODWARD, of the Society for the Propagation of the Gospel, Dublin, Ireland, the sum of Twenty pounds sterling.
(j)      TO MARGARET MELVILLE PYE, sister of my late wife, the sum of Two hundred pounds sterling.
(k)      TO KATE AND HANNAH KILLIGREW, of St John's or to the survivor of them the sum of One thousand dollars.
(l)      To the LORD BISHOP OF NEWFOUNDLAND, in trust, for the fund for the completion of the Tower of Newfoundland Cathedral, the sum of One thousand dollars.
(m)     To the RECTOR and CHURCHWARDENS of St Thomas's Church in St John's in trust, to be invested and the income applied annually to the Parish Budget, the sum of One thousand dollars.
(n)      To the TRUSTEES OF THE CHURCH OF ENGLAND ORPHANAGE, St John's, to be applied to their Endowment Fund, the sum of One thousand dollars.
(o)      To the DIOCESAN SYNOD OF NEWFOUNDLAND, in trust, to be invested and the income devoted annually to the Diocesan Budget, the sum of One thousand dollars.
(p)      To the DIRECTORS of the CHURCH OF ENGLAND COLLEGE, St John's, in trust to be invested and the income applied annually to the College Budget, the sum of One thousand dollars.
(q)      To the GRENFELL ASSOCIATION OF NEWFOUNDLAND, to be applied to their Endowment Fund, the sum of One thousand Dollars.
(r)      To the PERMANENT MARINE DISASTERS FUND OF NEWFOUNDLAND, the sum of One thousand dollars.
(s)      To the CHILD WELFARE ASSOCIATION, St John's, in trust, to be invested and the income applied annually to the work of the Association, the sum of One thousand dollars.
(t)      To MRS MARY BREHM, in trust, for the Old Ladies Home, St John's, the sum of Two hundred dollars.
(u)      To the Society for the PROTECTION OF ANIMALS, St. John's, the sum of Two hundred dollars.
(v)      To my friend JESSIE FREMAN (formerly JESSIE JOB) the diamond pin presented to me by His Royal Highness the Prince of Wales.
(w)      To my friends ALICE JOB and GLADYS REID, my pictures and books.
(X)      To my friend ROBERT BROWN JOB, my Tobacco cabinet.
(y)      To my friend WILLIAM ANGUD REID the silver cigar box presented to me by His ??? Sir Walter Davidson.
(z)      To KATE and HANNAH KILLIGREW or to the survivor my plans and ??? ??? ???.
(4a)    With regard to the disposal of my papers and personal effects I direct my Executors to destroy whatever in their opinion is of little or no value, the balance of my effects to become the property of my brother RICHARD FURNEAUX WATSON.
(5)      I devise and bequeath all my real and personal estate not hereby otherwise disposed of unto the EASERN TRUST COMPANY, as trustees, IN TRUST for the following purposes that is to say; to convert the whole thereof into money, except as hereinafter mentioned, and invest the same safely; with power for the said trustee to vary such investments at its discretion and out of the annual income therefrom to pay the following sums, that is to say;
The whole of the income (after deducting expenses and the expenditure referred to in section (8) following) shall be paid to my brother RICHARD FURNEAUX WATSON, of Baltimore, U.S.A. and his wife Kate Watson; and their children KATHARYN ALVORD AND DORA MELVILLE WATSON AND ANNIE FURNEAUX WATSON and any other child that they may have, share and share alike; or to such of the said persons as may from time to time survive; and if any of the said children of RICHARD FURNEAUX WATSON and KATE WATSON shall die leaving issue, such issue shall receive such share as their parent would have received if living; and upon the death of the last survivor of the said RICHARD FURNEAUX WATSON, KATE WATSON, KATHARYN ALVORD, DORA MELVILLE WATSON, AND ANNIE FURNEAUX WATSON, then the capital sum invested for the purpose of this section shall be divided among the issue if any of the said Katharyn, Dora, and Annie Watson and other child if any; and if they or any of them be at that time under twenty years of age, then their share shall be placed in trust for them until attainment of that age.
The annual share of Dora and Annie Watson, until they come of age, shall be paid to the father, or the mother, in my executors discretion, or if both shall die, then to such person as my executors may deem fit, in trust for the maintenance of each child, until each child shall attain the age of Twenty-one years; after which date their shares shall be paid to them direct. All payments shall be made half-yearly.
In the event of the death of all the legatees in this section mentioned without issue, then the whole of the said invested sum shall be divided by my executors between the Church of England Orphanage, St John's, the Grenfell Association of Newfoundland, the Child Welfare Association, St John's, and the Newfoundland Permanent Marine Disasters Fund, as such of these bodies as may be in existence.
(7)      I direct that my shares in the City Club Building Company Ltd.??? be held until at least twenty years after my death, and that in the meantime they shall form part of the trust created under the proceeding section.
(8)      I direct that my executors shall effect an arrangement with the Committee of the Church of England Cemetery at St John's by which the graves of my wife and myself shall be properly cared for each year, and with the Committee of the General Protestant Cemetery at St Johns for the care of the graves of my mother and brothers, and with the Directors of the Mount royal Cemetery at Montreal, Canada, for the care of the graves of my father and sister, the expense in each case to be paid out of my estate.

THIS IS A CODICIL TO THE WILL OF ME, ROBERT WATSON OF SAINT JOHN'S IN THE ISLAND OF NEWFOUNDLAND, THE SAID WILL BEARING DATE THE 28TH DAY OF AUGUST 1924
I bequeath the following legacies, that is to say:
(a)      To Mrs KATHLEEN STRICKLAND, of Longdone Lodge, Haslemere, Surrey, England, in trust for my goddaughter ANNE ABBOT STRICKLAND, the sum of one hundred pounds sterling.
(b)      To THE ARCHBISHOP OF ST JOHN'S, in trust for the roman Catholic Orphanages, the sum of Five hundred dollars.
(c)      To THE MANAGER OF THE METHODIST ORPHAGE, in trust, the sum of Five hundred dollars.
(d)      The bequest to Mrs Mary Brehm, in section (4) sub-section (t) of my will aforesaid, is hereby increased to five hundred dollars. In the event of Mrs Brahm predeceasing me this bequest to be paid to the COWAN MISSION for the purpose named.
Dated at St. John's Newfoundland, this twenty-seventh day of March A.D. 1920.

THIS IS A FURTHER CODICIL TO THE WILL OF ME ROBERT WATSON OF SAINT JOHN'S IN THE ISLAND OF NEWFOUNDLAND, THE SAID WILL BEARING DATE THE 28TH DAY OF AUGUST 1924;
I direct that paragraph (3) in my said will be amended in so far as it relates to the placing of a headstone at my grave. I now direct that the headstone at present standing to my late wife shall remain and that a similar stone of Cornish granite shall be imported from England in accordance with instructions which are contained in a separate envelope dated December 3rd, 1927, which will be found among my private papers.
I further direct that, if it is possible to pay the various legacies without disposing of my shares and bonds in the International Telephone and Telegraph Corporation, these are not to be sold but are to remain as part of my estate.
Dated at St John's Newfoundland this twenty fifth day of May A.D. 1929
