Will of William Walsh
from Newfoundland will books volume 7 pages 145-146 probate year 1902

Last Will and Testament of
William Walsh of St. John's
Farmer deceased.

      In the name of God Amen. I William Walsh of 26 Mullock Street do make publish and declare this as and for my last will and testament.
First I direct all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses to be paid. My funeral expenses not to exceed the sum of fifty dollars
Second. I bequeath the sum of forty dollars to Rt. Rev. M. F. Howley Bishop of St. John's for a High Mass for the repose of my soul.
I give and bequeath my house and garden to Bridget Phelan wife of Timothy Phelan.

  • I bequeath the following amounts, namely, to Susan Berwick the sum of twenty dollars ($20.00)
  • To Sister Gabriel the sum of twenty ($20.00) dollars,
  • To Sister Phelan the sum of ten ($10.00) dollars,
  • To Revd A. Maher the sum of Twenty ($20.00) dollars for masses for the repose of the souls of William, Alice and Mary Walsh,
  • To Rev. C. H. O'Neill the sum of twenty ($20.00) dollars for masses for the repose of the souls of my father and mother, Ned and Bridget Walsh,
  • To John Murphy Cooper, William St. I give the sum of Thirty pounds ($120.00) and my watch,
  • To Berta Murphy daughter of John Murphy the sum of ($4.00) four dollars,
  • To Rev. Dr. O'Reilly the sum of twenty ($20.00) dollars for masses for the repose of myself and my wife Alice Walsh,
  • To Revd. Brother Slattery the sum of twenty ($20.00) dollars for Mount Cashel Orphanage,
  • To Revd. Father Ashley the sum of ten ($10.00) for masses
  • To Revd W. Jackman the sum of twenty ($20.00) for masses for the repose of the souls of my brother and sisters, Tom, Mary and Margaret Walsh
  • To the woman who prepares my body for burial I give the sum of forty shillings.

All the rest residue and remainder of my moneys property and effects I give and bequeath to the Bishop of St. John's for the purposes of the Roman Catholic Church. I do also direct that should any of my nephews or nieces living in the United States dispute or raise any question as to the validity of my will they be paid one British guinea in lieu of all claims they may have or claim to have to my property and no more. I appoint John Murphy to be the executor of this my will. (Sgd) William his x mark Walsh. Signed by the said Testator as and for his last will and Testament in our presence, who in his presence, at his request and in the presence of each other have hereto subscribed our hands as witnesses at St. John's this 21st day of February A.D. 1902. The said will having been first read over and explained to the said testator (sgd) John A. Butler (sgd) James M. Kent.
