Will of John Spence

Last will and Testament of
John Spence of Harbor Grace
Gentleman deceased

      Know all men by these presents that I John Spence of Harbor Grace Newfoundland Gentleman being of sound disposing mind memory and recollection do make publish and declare this to be my last will and Testament
(1) I will bequeath and give to my son John Spence the land and house now occupied by him with 1/3 coal house in the rear for ever he is to pay my wife Frances E. Spence rent sixteen dollars per year as long as she remains in my name
(2) I will bequeath and give to my son Kenneth Spence the land and house now occupied by him with 1/3 of the coal house in the rear for ever he is to pay my wife Frances E. Spence rent twelve dollars a year as long as she remains in my name
(3) I will bequeath and give to my wife Frances E. Spence land and house now occupied by me with 1/3 of the coal house in the rear while she remains in my name and from and immediately after her death to my son Samuel Spence fo ever.
(4) I confirm a deed of gift of land made by me to my late son Stephen Spence.
(5) I will bequeath and give to my son Samuel Spence forty four feet of land from East to west bounded by Harvey Street on the North Bennetts lane on the west and on the south by house and land occupied by Thomas Lynch, to be used by my wife Frances E. Spence until Samuel requires it for building purposes.
(6) I will bequeath and give to my wife Frances E. Spence as long as she remains in my name the furniture and household goods now in my house and immediately after her death to be equally divided between my sons and daughters
(7) I will devise bequeath and give to my wife Frances E. Spence all my monies in the Harbor Grace Branch Savings Bank and the Newfoundland Savings Bank for her sole use and behoof
(8) I hereby appoint Alfred H. Seymour Esq Stipendiary Magistrate of Greenspond to be sole Executor to this my last will and Testament and revoke all previous wills by me at any time heretofore made.
In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand this Twenty seventh day of May 1898 (sgd) John his X mark Spence. Signed by the said testator John Spence as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us present at the same time, who, at his request in his sight and presence and in the presence of each other having subscribed our names as attesting witnesses being first read over and explained
(sgd) Henry Corbin Watts Water Street Hr. Grace.
(Sgd) Andrew T. Drysdale Water Street Hr. Grace

      I certify the foregoing to be a correct copy of the last will and Testament of John Spence deceased
