Last will and testament of
Alexander Smith of St. John's
Stone cutter deceased

In the name of God Amen

I Alexander Smith of St. John's in the Island of Newfoundland stone cutter do make publish and declare this paper writing to be my last will and testament and I hereby annul and make void all former wills by me made or executed.
First I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Helen all my shares or stock in the Union Bank of Newfoundland subject to the conditions, hereinafter imposed.
Second I give devise and bequeath unto my said daughter Helen the fee simple property purchased by me from Henry Studdy Chake situate on the south side of Water Street in St. John's aforesaid and at present occupied by Mrs. Ronse and Bain Johnson & Co, subject however to the lease from said Henry Studdy to Robert Grieve and Walter Bain Grieve. This bequest to be subject to the conditions hereinafter imposed.
Third I give devise and bequeath unto my said daughter Helen all my right title and interest of in and to the dwelling house in which I now reside together with all my household furniture of every description whatsoever and subject to the conditions hereinafter imposed.

The condition and obligations to which my said daughter Helen is bound are as follows viz: that she my said daughter Helen shall give a comfortable home to and supply my sons Alexander and William with board lodging and rainment during the term of their and each of their natural lives.
Fourth I give devise and bequeath unto my said daughter Helen my cottage and grounds known as "Clyde Cottage" in St. John's aforesaid together with the grazing ground and other land situate on the south side of the Mundy Pond Road for her sole use and benefit to be disposed of as she may direct.
Fifth I give devise and bequeath to my daughter Isabella Hunt the house now occupied by her and the sum of eight hundred dollars free from the debts or control of her present or any future husbands she may have.
Sixth. I give and bequeath unto my daughter Catherine Grenfell the house now occupied by her together with the sum of eight hundred dollars free from the debts or control of her present or any future husband she may have.
Seventh. I give devise and bequeath unto my daughter Barbara Grace the dwelling house now occupied by Rodger Callahan together with the sum of two hundred pounds equal to eight hundred dollars.
Eight. I give devise and bequeath unto my son Robert the sum of fourteen hundred dollars, but from this bequest must be deducted any balance due me at the time of my decease by him for money advanced by me to him at the time he purchased his present residence. I also give devise and bequeath unto my said son Robert my gold watch and chain also my gun.
Ninth it is my desire and hereby direct that no distribution of the property herein before bequeathed shall take place until one year after my decease.
Tenth. In case of the death of any of my children hereinbefore named dying without leaving lawful issue, then and in such case the share devised bequeathed to such child shall go to and be equally divided amongst my surviving unmarried children.
Eleven. It is my desire and wish that my daughter Barbara Grace shall reside with my daughter Helen while she remains unmarried and shall pay her proportion of household expenses.
Twelfth. I give devise and bequeath all other property of every description whatsoever that I may die possessed of and not herein bequeathed unto my said daughter Helen to be disposed of as she may direct.
Thirteenth. I hereby nominate and appoint my son Robert Smith, my son-in-law Robert Templeton executors and my daughter Helen executrix of this my last will and testament. In witness whereof I have subscribed my hand and seal Alexander Smith Set at St. John's aforesaid this 11th day of December A.D. 1890 (sgd) Alexander Smith. Signed sealed published and declared by said Alexander Smith as and for his last will and testament in presence of us and each of us who have at his request in his presence and in presence of each other subscribed our names as witnesses hereto 11th Decr. 1890 (sgd) Charles Keith Duncan. (Sgd) M. J. O'Mara
I certify the foregoing to be a correct copy of the last will and testament of Alexander Smith deceased.
