Last will and Testament
of John G. Skelton
of St. John's Physician Deceased
.

This is the last will and testament of me John Gent Skelton heretofore of Bonavista but at present of St. John's Newfoundland physician and I hereby revoke all former wills by me made.
1----- I give devise and bequeath unto my wife Mary Hannah all that meadow situate in Bonavista which I purchased from Samuel Linten
2------ I give devise and bequeath the sum of one hundred dollars to the use of Christ Church Bonavista.
3. ----- I direct that the land and premises with the dwelling house thereon wherein I have lived at Bonavista for the past forty years and upward and all my household furniture (except such furniture aas my wife shall wish to retain) be sold and the proceeds thereof invested by my executors in such way as they shall deem advantageous. ----
4.-------------- I desire that the dwelling house which I am now building on land situate on the lane leading from Kings Bridge Road to Forest Road St. John's be completed by my executors.
5. ----- I give devise and bequeath the estate lands houses debentures bank and other shares stock securities and property whether real or personal (except the land and money bequeathed in the first and second paragraphs of this my will) unto my executors hereinafter named in trust to apply the whole of the annual rent issues interest dividends proceeds and profits thereof to the use and benefit of my said wife during her unmarried life but in case she shall marry again she shall forfeit all interest in or claim upon my estate (except as to the bequest to her made in the first paragraph of this my will) and on such marriage the whole of my estate shall be distributed by my executors according to the provisions hereinafter made. -
6th. ----- In case my said wife shall not marry again she shall be at liberty by her last will and testament to bequeath to such person or persons as she may please one moiety or half of all my estate, to wit of the principal the annual proceeds whereof are bequeathed to her pursuant to the terms of the last preceding paragraph of this will.
7. ---- In case my said wife shall die intestate and without having remarried (or if she shall remarry then upon such marriage) I give devise and bequeath all the principal of my estate as follows: (a) one third part thereof to my sister Elizabeth Pittman Bayley and if she be not then living such one third part shall go in equal parts to such of her children as shall then be living (the children of a deceased child to take their deceased parent's share) (b) one third part thereof to such of the children of my deceased sister Amelia Kirby as shall then be living, in equal parts (the children of a deceased child to take their deceased parent's share) ( c) one sixth part thereof to my sister in law Elizabeth Sarah McGowan and if she be not living such one sixth shall go in equal parts to such of her children as shall then be living, (the children of a deceased child to take their deceased parents share) and (d) one sixth part thereof to the Reverend Theophilus Petten and if he be not then living such one sixth part shall go in equal parts to such of his children as shall then be living (the children of a deceased child to take their deceased parents share) -----------
8. - On the death of my said wife in case she shall not have married again and if she shall have made a will, I give and bequeath the remaining moiety or half of all my estate and so much of the other moiety or half as she shall not have bequeathed as follows namely: - one half to the said Elizabeth Pittman Bayley and if she be not then living her share shall go to her children then living in equal parts (the children of a deceased child to take their deceased parents share); and the other half to such of the children of my deceased sister Amelia Kirby as shall then be living in equal parts (the children of a deceased child to take their deceased parents share)
9. - With the written consent of my said wife my executors at any time during her, unmarried life may sell out any of the debentures shares stock or other property aforesaid and in such case shall re-invest the proceeds in such manner or on such security as they may deem advantageous.
10. - I appoint my brother the Honourable George Skelton and my brother in law John R. McGowan executors of this my will. Dated at St. John's this thirty first day of December A.D. eighteen hundred and ninety. Jno. G. Skelton. Signed published and declared by the said testator as and for his last will and testament on the date last above written in the presence of us the subscribers who in the presence of the testator and of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as such witnesses Geo. M. Johnson Jos. Shea.
I certify the foregoing to be a correct copy of the last will and testament of John G. Skelton.
