Will of James Sharpe
I James Sharpe of Crow Head in the Island of Twillingate being of sound mind make this my last will and testament. First I give and bequeath to my beloved wife Elizabeth Sharpe for her use & benefit all the house, premises, lands, belonging to me in the aforenamed place, as well as cattle, boats, nets & whatever else I may own, as well as all debts which may be due to me at the time of my death subject only to these conditions or exceptions. Secondly I will that all my sons as long as they remain upon the room & with my wife aforesaid shall have the use of all boats & Nets to me belonging as well as the joint use of stores & stages & flakes, erected for the purposes of the fishery.
Thirdly, I will that if my sons Uriah Sharpe, Thomas Sharpe, Solomon Sharpe & James Sharpe should remove from the premises & not live with my wife Elizabeth Sharpe, that they shall have a gun & a bed apiece, Fourthly, I give to my son Richard Sharpe a capped gun, Fifthly I appoint John Anstey of Front Harbour my sole executor.
Note: The wills in those will books are NOT actual wills. They are either hand-written copies or in later years typed copies of a, "last will and testament," written or typed by the court clerk, after the death of the testator, when the executor presented them to the court for probate. The court clerk didn't list the signatures at the bottom, he (or she) just put them in the book in whatever order they were in, on the original document, no spacing most of the time, no punctuation. The originals were kept by the executor.
We who have typed these wills, have made every effort to include all the errors that were on the microfilm, in order to avoid destroying the integrity of the originals, where ever they may be.
