Last will and testament of Francis
Scott of St. John's a Pensioner

The last will and testament of me Francis Scott of St. John's Nfld formerly of Her Majesty's Service now a Pensioner.

First I will and bequeath to my beloved wife Elizabeth Scott all the right title and interest of my estate in and to a certain policy of Insurance effected upon my life for the sum of one hundred pounds sterling.

Second. Should my wife die before me then the policy of insurance of one hundred pounds is to be divided between the children of Frances Scott Elizabeth Vey (deceased) and Georgina Downey (also deceased) as follows. To the children of Francis Scott that is Harry Scott Walker Scott William Scott and Edith Scott one third of the said one hundred pounds between them share and share alike. To the children of my daughter the late Elizabeth Vey that is Gertrude Vey Mary Bell Vey Julia Vey and Margaret Vey one third of the one hundred pounds between them share and share alike and to the child of my second daughter the late Georgina Downey that is Alice Downey the remaining one third of the one hundred pounds insurance as above mentioned.

Third I give and bequeath to my wife during the time of her natural life all my right title and interest in and to the dwelling house I now possess situate on Hayward Avenue and after her death then the house is to be held by my executors (hereafter named) and to be disposed of as follows - after paying for insurance and incidental expenses the remainder of rents to be paid to my granddaughter Alice Downey until she is married or in case of her death before marriage then the house is to be sold and the proceeds divided between my grandchildren as in the second part of this will share and share alike. - Should Alice Downey live after the house is sold then she is to have one third of the net proceeds of the house and the other grandchildren named to have the other two thirds divided between them share and share alike. Should however my wife Elizabeth Scott survive and require means for her actual support and maintenance she may devise a sufficient sum for her requirements by way of mortgage or otherwise as she may be advised by my executors

Fourth. I leave and bequeath all my household furniture and personal effects to my wife and after her death to my granddaughter Alice Downey daughter of my late daughter Georgina Downey.

Fifth After the payment of all my just debts and funeral and testamentary expenses of myself and my wife I will and bequeath to my granddaughter Elizabeth Vey all the rest residue and remainder of the estate of which I may or shall die possessed.

Sixth. I hereby revoke cancel and annul all former wills and codicils to wills that I have made and I now constitute and appoint Lionel T. Chancey of St. John's Sub. Sheriff and James Augustus Clift also of St. John's Solicitor and Attorney at law to be my executors of this my last will and testament. - In witness whereof I have hereunto subscribed my hand at St. John's aforesaid this first day of March Anno Domini one thousand eight hundred and eighty eight. Francis Scott - Signed published and declared by the said Francis Scott as and for his last will and testament in presence of us who in the presence of each other have subscribed our names as witnesses hereto - John Maddon - Edw. Thomas.
