Last will and Testament of
Susannah Roberts of St. John’s
widow deceased
This is the last will and Testament
of me Susannah Roberts of St. John’s in the Island
of Newfoundland widow.
1. It is my will and desire and I hereby direct
that my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses shall be first paid
out of my estate and for this purpose and the payment of the legacies
hereinafter mentioned I direct that all the property and effects of every
description of which I may die possessed save and except that hereinafter
specially bequeathed shall be sold.
2. I give and bequeath to the Reverend
Dean Ryan of St. Patricks the sum of Forty dollars for a high mass and
office for the soul of my late husband John Roberts also
the sum of Forty dollars for a high mass for the repose of my soul and
also the sum of Ten dollars for masses for my late mother Father and
sister.
3. I give and bequeath to my executor hereinafter named the sum
of Fifty dollars for the purpose of placing one headstone and two foot
stones and an iron railing on the ground where my late husband has been
and where I shall be buried at Mount Carmel Cemetery.
4. I give
and bequeath to my niece Rosie Scott the sum of eight
dollars and my blue velvet dress and jacket.
5. I give and bequeath to
my sister Teresa Coady the sum of Ten dollars to provide
mourning clothes for herself
6. I give and bequeath the sum of Ten dollars
to the Reverend Father Crook and the sum of Twenty dollars to the Reverend
Dean Ryan as personal legacies
7. I give and bequeath to my
sister Teresa Coady the following articles namely my bed and mattress,
bedstead bolster and two pillows, bed clothes, four pictures (one of
the Queen, one of the late Father Morris and two of
ships) four mats and my hearthrug, my late husband likeness and that
of his father, the view of the factory, the clock, two trunks and their
contents the three pictures in my bedroom and the three best chairs in
my house together with all my clothes not hereinbefore mentioned and
the residue of my estate after payment of the other legacies.
8. I declare
and direct that the legacies of money herein made save and except those
to the Reverend Dean Ryan and the Reverend Father
Crook and to my Executor
for the purpose set forth shall be subject to the amount realized for
my estate and that should my estate fail to amount to a sum sufficient
to meet them all then the amounts shall be rateably reduced in accordance
with the proportions they shall bear to the available whole amount.
9.
I hereby appoint Thomas J. Allen of St. John’s Grocer to be Executor
of this my last will and Testament. In witness whereof I have hereunto
my hand subscribed at St. John’s aforesaid this Fourteenth day
of April A.D. 1898. (Sgd) Susannah her X mark Roberts. Signed published
and declared by the Testatrix (by making her mark thereto) as and for
her last will and Testament in the presence of us who in her presence
at her request and in the presence of each other have hereunto our hands
subscribed as witnesses the said will having first been read over and
explained to the Testatrix (sgd) John J. McCarthy. (Sgd) Arthur
