In re Robert Roberts       deceased

In the name of God Amen. I Robert Roberts, merchant of Hermitage Cove, Hermitage Bay, district of Fortune, in the Island of Newfoundland, being of sound mind declare this to be my last will and testament revoking all former wills and codicils.

  • My first desire is that all my just debts and funeral expenses be paid.
  • I give and bequeath to my six sons Henry, Morgan, Frederick, Benjamin, Charles and Alexander, two hundred dollars [$200.00] each, and to my two daughters Rose and Rachel, two hundred [$200.00] each.
  • I give and bequeath to my wife Miriam two hundred dollars [$200.00]
  • I also give and bequeath to my wife Miriam my dwelling house and all household furniture and effects, so long as she shall live and remain unmarried, my son Alexander to maintain her and live in the house with her and on her death or marriage the dwelling house furniture and effects to become the property of my son Alexander, also all lands attached thereto.
  • I also give and bequeath to my son Alexander, stores, wharves, shop and shop goods and all fishing gear with all lands attached thereto, except the east end part of field known as Dawson's field which I give and bequeath to my son Morgan, so long as he shall live and after his death the said piece of land to be divided between his two sons Edward and John, it is my request that this piece of land shall never be sold out of the Roberts family; it may be rented for a term of years.
  • I give and bequeath all the rest and residue of my estate real personal and mixed of which I shall be possessed or entitled to at the time of my decease to my son Alexander.
  • I do nominate and appoint my son Alexander and Arthur W. Miller to be executors of this my last will and testament.

In testimony whereof I the testator have hereunto set my hand and seal this twenty fourth day of January in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and eighteen.

Note: The wills in those will books are NOT actual wills. They are hand-written copies of a, "last will and testament," written by the court clerk, after the death of the testator, when the executor presented them to the court for probate. The court clerk didn't list the signatures at the bottom, he (or she) just put them in the book in whatever order they were in, on the original document, no spacing most of the time, no punctuation. The originals were kept by the executor.

We who have typed these wills, have made every effort to include all the errors that were on the microfilm, in order to avoid destroying the integrity of the originals, where ever they may be.
