Last Will of Bridget Raftus
of St. John's, Spinster
This is the last will and Testament of me Bridget
Raftus of St. John's in the Island of Newfoundland Spinster
First
I devise and bequeath unto my mother Bridget Raftus all that piece or parcel
of land with dwelling house thereon situate on Water Street in the west end
of the town of St. John's aforesaid the number of the said house being 323
To hold the said land and house unto my mother the said Bridget Raftus for
the term of her natural life and after her death the said land and house is
to be the property of the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of St. John's
And I desire that the said Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of St. Johns'
do cause masses to be offered up for the repose of the souls of my father Coleman
Raftus and my mother Bridget.
Secondly. I direct that my executor
hereinafter named do sell or cause to be sold by public auction or private
sale all that piece or parcel of land situate on the west side of Alexander
Street and adjoining the property of Saul Brien and devote the proceeds to
the payment of my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses and also the
debt of seventy dollars due by my brother Nicholas to my uncle John
Coleman residing at Cincinnati in the United States of America.
Thirdly.
I devise and bequeath unto the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of St.
John's the house adjoining the Eastern End of Victoria Park, on Water Street
West, and being one of three houses connected one with the other and I devise
that the said Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of St. John's do cause masses
to be celebrated for the repose of the souls of my brothers Richard
and Nicholas.
Fourthly.
I direct that my executor hereinafter named do sell or cause to be sold by
public auction or private sale the two houses adjoining the one mentioned in
the third bequest herein and out of the proceeds of such sale I bequeath two
hundred dollars to my niece Bridget Rielly and the residue of such proceeds
I bequeath to the Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation of St. Johns and I desire
that the said Roman Catholic Episcopal Corporation do cause masses to be celebrated
for the repose of my soul. I hereby appoint the Very Reverend John
Ryan, Dean
of St. Patricks, executor of this my last will and testament. I hereby revoke
all testamentary depositions heretofore made by me.
In witness whereof
I have hereunto my hand subscribed at St. John's aforesaid this thirteenth
day of October Anno Domini, one thousand nine hundred and two. Bridget
Raftus.
Signed by the said testatrix as and for her last will and testament in the
presence of us who in her presence at her request and in the presence of each
other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses. J. J. McCarthy.
