THE WILL OF HENRY MARTEN
OF PETTY HARBOUR - 1755

In the Name of God Amen. I HENRY MARTEN of PETTY HARBOUR in Newfoundland being in bodily health sound and disposing mind and memory and ? the perils and dangers of the seas and uncertainties of this transitory life do for avoiding controversies after my decease make publish and declare this my last Will and Testament in manner following that is to say ffirst I recommend my soul to God that gave it and my Body to the Earth or Seas as it shall please God to order and as for all my Worldly Estate I give bequeath and dispose thereof as followeth that is to say all and every such wages sum and sums of Money Lands Tenements Goods Chattels and Estate whatsoever as shall be any Ways one owing or belonging unto me at the time of my decease I give devise and bequeath the same unto my loving wife FFLORA MARTEN now in NEWTON ABBOT in the Parish of WOOLBRUGH in the County of DEVON I give and bequeath in manner following Impr. I give and bequeath to my sister ELIZ. GRAY one shilling to be paid in one year after my decease. Item I make FFLORA MARTEN my wife my whole and sole Executrix of all the above written as also I give and bequeath to my Wife FFLORA MARTEN four Boat rooms in PETTY HARBOUR in Newfoundland lying at the head of the Harbour commonly called by the Name of the ISLAND STAGES and lying between MR. NEWMANS plantation and WILLIAM WEBBS and also one skiff room or stage lying between JOHN CHAFES and Esq. CANES all in the south side of the Harbour declaring this to be my last Will and Testament revoking all others in Witness whereunto I have set my hand and seal this tenth day of April in the twenty eight year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lord George the Second of Great Britain Ffrance and Ireland King Defender of the Ffaith and so forth and in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and fifty five. This Will was proved at London the nineteenth day of April in the year of our Lord One thousand seven hundred and fifty eight before the Right Honourable Sir George ? Knight also Doctor of Laws Master Keeper or Commissary of the Prerogative Court of Canterbury, lawfully constituted by the Oath of FFLORA MARTEN, widow, the Relict of the Deceased and sole Executrix named in the said Will to whom administration was granted of all and singular the Goods Chattels and Credits of the said Deceased she having been first sworn by Commission duly to administer.
