Will of Mary Murray
from Newfoundland will books vol 11 page 436 probate year 1920

In re Mary Murray       deceased

I Mary Murray now of Cupids in the Electoral District of Port de Grave Newfoundland widow of James Murray deceased of St. John's Newfoundland being of sound and disposing mind though weak of body do hereby declare this to be my last Will and Testament and by this my Will revoke and annul any other Will I may have made.

  1. I hereby appoint Mr. John Hayes [of Michael] planter of Cupids aforesaid as sole executor of this my will.

  2. To Mary Power daughter of Patrick Power [of John] planter of Cupids aforesaid, I give devise and bequeath a piece or parcel of land situate by Cookstown Road, St. John's aforesaid measuring 23 1/2 feet by the said road the said piece or parcel of land being leased to Mr. Joseph Flaver of St. John's aforesaid.

  3. To Bridget Power wife of the said Patrick Power I give devise and bequeath the remainder of my estate both personal and real, the said real estate consisting of a tenement house situate by Cookstown road aforesaid, also a piece or parcel of land situate by Cookstown road aforesaid on which piece or parcel of land the said tenement house now stands. Also a third piece or parcel of land situate by Freshwater Road, St. John's aforesaid, the said 3rd piece of land having been bought by my late husband the said James Murray from Mr. Thomas Spry auctioneer of St. John's aforesaid.

  4. To the said Bridget Power I also give devise and bequeath two Newfoundland government Debenture Bonds bearing interest at 4 per cent, one of the said Bonds being Number 07665 for $250.00, the other Bond being Number 03055 for $500.00.

In witness whereof I do hereunto set my hand and seal at Cupids aforesaid this ninth day of December in the year of our Lord one thousand nine hundred and nineteen. The Interdelineation on page one hereof fifteenth line from the top having been made before the signing hereof. Mary Murray. Signed and sealed in our presence who in her presence and in that of each other do hereunto set our hands as witnesses. James Curran.   William his X mark Power.   Alex Serrick [teacher]

Note: The wills in those will books are NOT actual wills. They are hand-written copies of a, "last will and testament," written by the court clerk, after the death of the testator, when the executor presented them to the court for probate. The court clerk didn't list the signatures at the bottom, he (or she) just put them in the book in whatever order they were in, on the original document, no spacing most of the time, no punctuation. The originals were kept by the executor.

We who have typed these wills, have made every effort to include all the errors that were on the microfilm, in order to avoid destroying the integrity of the originals, where ever they may be.
