Last will and Testament of
Catherine Leonard of Barren Island
Placentia Bay, widow, deceased
.

In the name of God Amen. I Catherine Leonard formerly of Barren Island in Placentia Bay but now living in St. John's widow do make publish and declare this as and for my last will and testament.
Firstly I will and direct that all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses shall be paid and I require that my executor hereinafter named shall cause to be erected to my memory a small headstone the cost of which together with my funeral and testamentary expenses shall not exceed the sum of one hundred and sixty dollars.
Secondly I give devise and bequeath to his Lordship the Bishop of St. John's for the time being the sum of one hundred and twenty dollars for three high masses for the repose of my soul and a further sum of forty dollars for the repose of the soul of my late husband Edward Leonard
Thirdly. I give devise and bequeath the sum of eighty dollars each to the Reverend James J. McGrath the now guardian of Villa Nova Orphanage, the Reverend John Ryan, the Reverend Edmund Crook and the Reverend Patrick O'Brien all of St. Patricks Parish in St. John's and the sum of fifty dollars to the Reverend John Scott of the Cathedral St. John's and forty dollars to the Reverend Patrick O'Connor of Burin and the sum of twenty dollars to the Reverend M. A. Clancey of Placentia for the celebration of masses for the repose of my soul.
Fourthly I give devise and bequeath to my executor hereinafter named the sum of one hundred and sixty dollars to be by him distributed amongst the priests he thinks most in need of same in such sums as he thinks best for the celebration of masses for the repose of the soul of my late husband Edward Leonard.
Fifth I give devise and bequeath to the Reverend Michael Ryan of Topsail the sum of fifty dollars and to the Reverend John McGRath of Renews and the Reverend John Vereker of Ferryland the sum of forty dollars each for the celebration of masses for the repose of my soul and the soul of my said late husband Edward Leonard and of my niece Mary Shea who died at Barren Island last year.
Sixth. To the Reverend W. P. Dontrey of St. Kyrans and the Reverend Patrick O'Connor of Burin I give and bequeath the sum of forty dollars each for masses for the repose of the soul of my said niece Mary Shea who died last year at Barren Island aforesaid.
Seventh To my executor hereinafter named in addition to the sum already given to him for masses for the repose of the soul of my late husband in clause four of this my will I give devise and bequeath the sum of three hundred dollars for distribution amongst such priests as he thinks most in need of the same for the celebration of masses for the repose of my soul and the soul of my said late husband and a further sum of one hundred dollars I will and bequeath to him to be by him distributed in like manner for masses for the repose of the souls of my deceased relatives and friends.
Eight. To the Reverend James J. McGrath I bequeath the further sum of forty dollars for masses for the repose of the souls in purgatory.
Ninth I give devise and bequeath to my brothers David James and John Shea the sum of one hundred and twenty dollars each and to my sister Mrs. Margaret Murphy widow of Moses Murphy of Portugal Cove in Conception bay the sum of two hundred dollars.
Tenth. To my niece Margaret Nowlan wife of John Nowlan of St. John's Labourer the sum of sixty dollars and also to my niece Esther Comby wife of John Comby of Barren Island aforesaid the sum of sixty dollars.
Eleventh I give devise and bequeath to my nephews William and John Shea sons of my brother David Shea aforesaid the sum of forty dollars each.
Twelfth I give devise and bequeath the sum of one hundred dollars to the guardian for the time being of the said orphanage at Villa Nova near Topsail for the support and maintenance of that institution.
Thirteenth. To the Superioress for the time being of the ???? orphanage Belvidere near St. John's I give devise and bequeath the sum of one hundred dollars for the uses and purposes of the said orphanage.
Fourteenth. To each of the two Presentation Convents in St. John's namely the one at the Cathedral and at St. Patricks I give devise and bequeath the sum of fifty dollars and to each of the three Mercy Convents in St. John's namely the one on Military Road, at Belvidere and at Littledale the sum of fifty dollars and to the Convents in Placentia and Conception Harbor the sum of forty dollars each.
Fifteenth I give devise and bequeath to my executors hereinafter named the sum of fifty dollars wherewith to purchase a chalice for my friend the aforesaid Reverend James J. McGrath and also the further sum of fifty dollars for the purchase of a set of vestments for the Reverend William P. Dontney aforesaid
Sixteenth. To the Parish Priest for the time being of St. Kyrans in Placentia Bay I give devise and bequeath the sum of two hundred and forty dollars for distribution amongst the deserving poor of his parish and to the Reverend James J. McGrath aforesaid the sum of eighty dollars for distribution amongst the deserving poor of St. John's.
Seventeenth I give devise and bequeath to the parish Priest for the time being of St. Kyrans aforesaid the sum of eighty dollars to be by him expended on the chapel and cemetery at Barren Island in the said parish.
Eighteenth I give devise and bequeath to Fannie Allan wife of William Allen of St. John's watch-maker with whom I am now living the sum of sixty dollars and to my Nurse Ni?? Anne Galton of Water Street West St. John's the sum of twenty dollars for their own sole use and benefit over and above any sums I may owe to them for or on account of services board and lodging and nursing at the time of my decease.
Nineteenth. All the rest residue and remainder of my estate and effects I give devise and to my executor hereinafter named to be by him appointed to the charitable purposes as he may think proper and most deserving.
Twentieth. I do hereby nominate and appoint my friend Rodger McGrath of St. John's Gentleman to be executor of this my will. Lastly I do hereby revoke annul and declare void all other and former wills by me made. Dated at St. John's this 27th day of April A.D. 1892. (Sgd) Catherine her x mark Leonard. Signed published and declared by the said Catherine Leonard as and for her last will and testament by affixing her mark hereto after it had been read over and explained to her and expressing herself satisfied with its contents in our presence who in her presence and in the presence of each other have hereto subscribed our hands as witnesses on the day and year above written. I certify the foregoing to be a correct copy of the last will and testament of Catherine Leonard deceased.
