In re
GEORGE KNOWLING. DECEASED.
This is the last Will and Testament of me George Knowling of
St. John’s in the Island of Newfoundland, Merchant.

I appoint my sons Philip H. Knowling, George Knowling and
William U. Knowling, and my son in law Hector
M. McNeil (hereinafter called
my Trustees) Executors of this my last Will.
-
I give devise and bequeath ALL THAT piece
or parcel of land situate in St. John’s aforesaid and bounded
as follows, that is to say, on the North by Water Street by which it
measures fifty seven feet more or less, on the South by property belonging
to John Rodger of Greenock, Scotland, banker, by which
it measures fifty seven feet more or less, on the East partly by property
belonging to
Samuel Milley of St. John’s, General
Importer, and partly by property belonging belonging to the said John
Rodger by which it measures in all sixty two feet more or less,
and on the West by property belonging to Newman by which
it measures sixty two feet more or less TOGETHER
WITH all buildings and erections thereon (which said property
was demised by me unto G. Knowling Limited by an Indenture dated
the fourth day of September A.D. 1917 for the term of twenty five years
from the fifteenth day of january A.D. 1917 at the yearly rent of Two
thousand two hundred dollars) unto my Trustees UPON
TRUST to pay the net income
arising therefrom to my daughter Annie Lindberg for
and during her natural life and upon her death UPON TRUST to pay the
net income arising therefrom to my said daughter’s
husband John Lindberg (should he survive her) for and
during his natural life and upon the death of my said daughter and her
husband UPON
TRUST to
assign and convey the said premises unto G. Knowling Limited absolutely
and forever.

I give devise and bequeath ALL THAT piece
or parcel of land situate in St. John’s aforesaid and bounded
as follows, that is to say, on the South by Duckworth Street and measuring
thereby thirty three feet, on the East by Pilot’s Street and
measuring thereby one hundred and eight feet, on the North by land
reserved for a public road and measuring thereby fifty one feet,
and on the West by land of Fills Estate and measuring thereby one
hundred and eight feet TOGETHER WITH all buildings
and erections thereon (which said property was demised by me unto G.
Knowling Limited by an Indenture dated the fourth day of September
A.D. 1917 for the term of twenty five years from the 15th day of January
A.D. 1917 at the yearly rent of Seven hundred and fifty dollars) unto
my Trustees UPON TRUST to
pay the net income arising therefrom to my daughter Annie Lindberg for and during her natural life and upon her death UPON
TRUST to
pay the net income arising therefrom to my said daughter’s
husband John Lindberg (should he survive her) for and during his natural life
and upon the death of my said daughter and her said husband UPON
TRUST to assign
and convey the said premises unto G. Knowling Limited absolutely and
forever.

I give and bequeath all my household furniture, goods, chattels
and effects, including my carriages, sleighs and other vehicles and
horse, and all my personal goods and effects to my wife.

I give to the Church of England Orphanage, Belvidere Orphanage,
and the Methodist Orphanage, five hundred dollars each.

I give to my daughter Annie Lindberg Two thousand dollars.

I give the sums hereinafter mentioned to my following employees,
namely,
- to George Hall Two thousand dollars;
- to Charles F. Stevenson One thousand five hundred dollars;
- to John Valentine One thousand dollars;
- to James E. Dempster One thousand dollars;
- to George Hutchins One thousand dollars;
- to John Williams One thousand dollars;
- to William P. Butler Five hundred dollars;
- to William Bugden Five hundred dollars, provided that
the person to whom the legacy is left is in the employ of G.
Knowling Limited at the time of my death.
- I give my three hundred and ninety shares in G. Knowling Limited as
follows, that is to say,
- to my wife eighty;
- to my son Philip H. Knowling sixty;
- to my son George Knowling sixty;
- to my son William U. Knowling sixty;
- to my daughter Fanny McNeil forty;
- to my daughter Sarah Franklin forty;
- to my daughter Margaret Urquhart forty;
- and to my daughter Annie Lindberg ten.
- I direct that all my debts, death duties, funeral and testamentary
expenses be paid out of the residue of my estate and subject thereto I give and
bequeath the whole of said residue to my wife.
IN WITNESS WHEREOF I the said George Knowling have hereunto subscribed
my hand at St. John’s aforesaid this sixth day of August Anno Domini
One thousand nine hundred and twenty. G. KNOWLING.
SIGNED by the said George Knowling in the presence of us,
both being present at the same time, who in his presence and in the presence
of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.
