Last will and Testament of
Joseph Hicks of Flat Islands, Bonavista Bay
Fisherman deceased
The twenty eighth day of June
in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety eight.
I Joseph Hicks of Flat Island, Bonavista Bay, being
through the blessing of God in a sound state of mind and memory do make
and ordain this my last will and testament.
(1) I will and bequeath my
house and third part of the fishing room known as “Hick’s room” and
gardens also my personal effects, together with two Salmon nets, and
one seal net and all my money with bed and bedding to my foster mother
Mary Ann Butt
(2) I will and bequeath my spy-glass and
gun to Bartholomew Butt
(3) one salmon net I leave
to my uncle Andrew Butt.
(4) and I also leave a salmon
net to my uncle Joshua Butt.
(5) My other house which
came to me by the decease of my only brother Eli Hicks and all it contains
I will and bequeath to my foster mother Mary Ann Butt.
(6) The money which came to me through the decease of my brother is to
be used in burying me and purchasing suitable headstones to be erected
at our graves.
(7)
Should any remain it is to be equally divided among my three aunts viz:
Jane Butt of Flat isld. Elizabeth Butt of Berry Land and Emma
White of
Greenspond.
I appoint Theophilus J. Janes as my Executor.

Hicks as his last will and Testament in the presence of us the subscribers.
