Last will and Testament of
John Hickey of St. John's

.

In the name of God Amen I John Hickey of St. John's Planter do make ordain and publish the following as and for my last will and testament. 1st after the payment of all my just debts funeral and testamentary expenses I will and bequeath my monies chattels and effects as follows that is to say: I will and bequeath that land and dwelling house owned by me and situate on the eastside of Barters Hill in said town to the Roman Catholic Bishop of St. John's for the time being to take receive and apply the rents issues and profits thereof to the offering up of masses for the repose of my soul and the souls of my deceased brother Michael and my late wife Mary. I will and bequeath to Ellen Looney of St. John's the sum of thirty pounds. To the Reverend mother for the time being of the Convent of Mercy Military Road I will and bequeath the sum of five pounds currency. To the Roman Catholic Bishop of St. John's I will and bequeath the sum of five pounds to be applied by him towards the completion of Saint Patrick's Church River Head. Towards the support of the orphanage Belvidere I will and bequeath five pounds. Towards the support of the Schools of the Christian Brothers St. John's I will and bequeath four pounds. All the rest ??? of my monies chattles and effects will and bequeath to the Very Reverend John Scott to be applied by him to and towards such religious and charitable objects and purposes as he may consider worthy thereof. I nominate and appoint him the said Father Scott executor hereof. Dated at St. John's this 16th day of June A.D. 1880. (Sgd) John his x mark Hickey. Witness (Sgd) Jos. I. Little (Sgd) Jas. J. Murphy
