Groves James.       Last will of.

This is the last will and testament of me James Groves, Merchant of Bonavista, in the District of Bonavista, Newfoundland. I will and bequeath to my wife, and son Selby, my horse, cow, carriage, sleigh, carts stable, outhouses and the house I now live in with all the land they occupy & the land surrounding the same if owned by me; also the furniture (with the exception hereafter noted); also the shop and land connected therewith, also meadow ground, and potato ground to my wife and son Selby. I bequeath to them also the under part of the fish store also including the land.
To my son Alexander I bequeath the upper part of the fish store, the salt store, the stage and waterside premises, including the upper flake and the ground on which it stands, provided that my wife and son Selby, and daughter Mary Jane, have the use of fish flake, if necessary as long as they carry on business. I also bequeath to my son Alexander a piece of the marsh land, and that little piece of meadow ground adjoining his own land and now used for grazing the horse occasionally. I also bequeath to him my gold watch chain with the bar attached, and also the weather glass. The lower flake I bequeath to my sons Selby and Alexander to be equally divided between them including the land. To my daughter, Mary Jane, I bequeath as follows viz, the upper house, situated near the marsh, also the cellar, and piece of meadow ground in front of said house, and if my wife wishes she can give to Mary Jane a part of the potato garden near said house; I also bequeath to my daughter all the contents of the bedroom now occupied by her, and also the organ. My daughter, Mary Jane, can carry on the shop as long as she likes or as long as she remains single, the stock being for the use of my wife & son Selby; and my daughters Mary Jane and Gertrude. If they choose they can sell out the stock, and divide the proceeds equally among them. I also bequeath to my son Alexander $100.00 cash and $100.00 cash to my daughter Rebecca, and the remainder of my money to my wife, Mary Jane, Gertrude and Selby I further bequeath to my son Selby my gold watch with the gold chain attached. It is further provided that in the event of my wife marrying again she shall forfeit her claim.
