     The petition of Arthur Harold Greaves of Saint John's
Woollen Merchant: and John Duff of Carbonear.

HUMBLY SHEWETH

1. That Harry Edmund Greaves late of Saint John's aforesaid Woollen Merchant deceased died there on the 3^rd. day of April May^RA A.D. 1931 having previously made and executed his last will and testament dated the 27^th. day of October A.D. 1926 and of which he appointed your petitioners executors: and four codicils thereto dated respectively the 15^th. day of December A.D. 1926, the 10^th. day of January A.D. 1927, the 7^th. day of March A.D. 1927 and the 6^th. day of February A.D. 1928: which are hereto annexed marked "A" "B" "C" "D" and "E" respectively
2. Said deceased at the time of his death was possessed of property within the jurisdiction of your Honourable Court of the probable value of $8,904.37.
3. The Inventory and valuation hereto annexed marked "F" is to the best of the petitioners' knowledge information and belief a just and true inventory and valuation of the property estate and effects of said deceased at the time of his death as far as petitioners can at present ascertain.
4. No probate of any will nor letters of administration to the estate of said deceased have been granted to any person.

     Petitioners therefore pray that probate of the said will Of said deceased with the codicils thereto may be granted to them.
     And as in duty bound they will ever pray etc.

THIS is the last will and testament of me Harry Edmund Greaves of Saint John's in the Island of Newfoundland Woolen Merchant.

1. I appoint my son Arthur Harold Greaves and my son-in-law John Duff of Carbonear executors of my will.
2. I give and bequeath the proceeds of my life insurance with the Masonic Society to my wife Lydia T. Greaves.
3. I give and bequeath the proceeds of my life insurance policy with the New York Mutual Insurance Company to my children in equal shares (the shares of any or either of my children predeceasing me to go to their children respectively living at my death, if any, )
4. I give to my daughters Mary F. Duff and Edna J. Goodwin all family photographs and all my paintings done by them.
5. I will and direct that my said wife Lydia T. Greaves is to have the use of my dwelling house situate on Freshwater Road in Saint John's and the furniture and contents (save as aforesaid) during her life and while she remain unmarried. On her death or remarriage the same shall be sold and the proceeds divided equally among my^{MC WSW} children (the shares of any or either of my children predeceasing me to go to their children respectively living at my death, if any, ). Should (living inserted with initials above) the said dwelling and furniture be destroyed or damaged by fire while my wife shall have the use of same, the insurance moneys shall be applied (if my wife so desire) in rebuilding and replacing the same, or (as to the insurance upon the dwelling) in the purchase of another house: and in the latter case the present land may be sold and the proceeds shall be considered part of the insurance upon the dwelling and applied accordingly. Should my wife not desire to have the insurance so applied the damaged property shall be sold and the proceeds added to the insurance: and the fund so made up shall be held by my executors upon the same trusts and conditions as are provided by this clause with regard to the said dwelling house and furniture.

This is the will or paperwriting referred to in the annexed affidavit of Mary Croke dated the 7 day of May 1931 Robert Alsop Clerk

I give and bequeath to my son Arthur Harold Greaves all the stock-in-trade, moneys, goods, credits, assets and effects of every description of or belonging to the business carried on by me at Saint John's subject to the liabilities of the said business and upon and subject to the following terms and conditions, viz:
(a)      He shall pay to my said wife the sum of thirty dollars per month for her own use during her life and while she shall remain unmarried: and to her sister Martha Whitten of Saint John's Spinster the sum of twenty dollars per month during the life of her the said Martha Whitten: Provided that should the said Martha Whitten predecease my wife the sum of thirty dollars per month payable to my said wife by my said son under this clause shall on her death be increased to forty dollars per month.
(b)      He shall pay to my son Stanley Woods Greaves the sum of Fifteen hundred dollars: and to my daughter Edna J. Goodwin the sum of fifteen hundred dollars and to my daughter Mary F. Duff, the sum of five hundred dollars out of the said business in yearly installments of not less than one fifth of the full amount the first payment to be made within one year from the date of my death: and until he shall pay out the full amount of the said sums to my said son Stanley Woods Greaves and my said daughter Edna J. Goodwin and my said daughter Mary F. Duff respectively he shall pay them interest at the rate of five per cent per annum upon the amounts from time to time unpaid.
(c)      He shall pay and discharge all insurance and taxes in respect of my dwelling house while my said wife shall be entitled to the use therof under the foregoing provisions of this my will.
(d)     If during the life of my said wife and while she remains unmarried the said business should be would up or my said son Arthur Harold Greaves should die or cease to carry on the said business then he or his estate shall pay my said wife in lieu of the said monthly payments the sum of three thousand dollars out of the proceeds of the said business.
5.      Should my said son Arthur Harold Greaves decline to accept the bequest of my business subject to the conditions of this my will the said sums of fifteen hundred dollars each to my son Stanley Woods Greaves and my daughter Edna J. Goodwin, the said sum of five hundred dollars to my daughter Mary F. Duff and the said sum of three thousand dollars to my said wife shall be paid to them respectively out of the proceeds of my business: and the balance of the proceeds of my said business after payment of the said sums shall go to the said Arthur Harold Greaves absolutely.
6.      All the rest residue and remainder of my property estate and effects of every description, if any, I give devise and bequeath to my said son Arthur Harold Greaves.

THIS is a codicil to the last will and testament of me Harry Edmund Greaves of Saint John's Woollen Merchant. Clause (c) of paragraph 6 of said will is hereby cancelled and annulled and the following substituted therefor:
"He shall while my said wife shall be entitled to the use of
"my dwelling house and furniture under my will insure and keep
" insured the said dwelling house in the sum of at least six
"thousand dollars and the said furniture in the sum of at
"least two thousand dollars and shall pay and discharge all
"insurance premiums and taxes in respect of my said dwelling
"house and furniture."
     WITNESS my hand at Saint John's aforesaid this 6^th day of February Anno Domini One thousand nine hundred and twenty eight.

Harry Edmund Greaves was born in Manchester, England about 1855 and died in St. John's 3 May, 1931. On October 1, 1879 he married Emma Chesley Woods, daughter of Joseph T. Harry and Emma had seven children.

Edna Josephine Greaves who married an American, Grover C Goodwin, on 24 Oct 1908. They were living in Richmond, Virginia by 1917. Grover died in Richmond, Virginia in 1942.

Eleanor Agnes Greaves who died in 1894.

Mary Florence Greaves who married John Duff of Carbonear.

Gertrude Greaves was born about 1882 and died in 1892.

Stanley Woods Greaves was born 29 April 1883. He married May Martin from Harbour Grace. May was the daughter of Matthew Martin and Jane Maria Mercer. Matthew Martin was a brother of my great grandfather Frederic Martin.

Stanley and May moved to Kentucky in July 1907. Stanley died in Louisville, Kentucky 11 March, 1959. May died in Louisville, Kentucky 1 August, 1952.

Arthur Harold Greaves was born about 1887 and died in 1959. He married an Eileen Mary ????

Emma Greaves died as an infant in January 1896.

Harry married Lydia T Whitten 23 October, 1915.
