Will of Johanna Grace
from the Newfoundland will books volume 12 page 101 probate year 1921

In re JOHANNA GRACE.      DECEASED.

This is the last Will and Testament of me, Johanna Grace of St. John's, Newfoundland, Widow. I hereby revoke all former Wills by me at any time made and declare this to be my last Will and Testament.

  1. I give and bequeath to Mrs. Mary Carroll, wife of Thomas Carroll that piece of land together with dwelling house thereon No. 79, situate of the West side of King's Road in the town of St. John's, aforesaid.
  2. I give and bequeath to my niece Bridget Duff, wife of Edward Duff that piece of land together with dwelling house thereon, No. 87, on the West side of King's Road aforesaid, upon condition that she care for me till my death and pay all the expenses of my burial.
  3. If not already disposed of by sale or otherwise before my death I give and bequeath to my Executor hereinafter named the remainder of my land on King's Road with the dwelling houses thereon, Nos. 83 & 85 in trust to sell the same & pay the proceeds to the Mother Superior of the Belvidere Orphanage for the orphans. And I appoint Mr. John Nangle of St. John's, Contractor to be the sole executor of this my last Will and Testament.

In Witness Whereof: I have hereunto set my hand at St. John's aforesaid this 29th day of August Anno Domini, One thousand Nine hundred and Twenty one. JOHANNA her X mark GRACE
Signed by the said Testatrix in the presence of us both being present at the same time who at her request in her presence and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses, having been first read over and explained. John J. Nangle.     J.A. Winter.

Note: The wills in those will books are NOT actual wills. They are hand-written copies of a, "last will and testament," written by the court clerk, after the death of the testator, when the executor presented them to the court for probate. The court clerk didn't list the signatures at the bottom, he (or she) just put them in the book in whatever order they were in, on the original document, no spacing most of the time, no punctuation. The originals were kept by the executor.

We who have typed these wills, have made every effort to include all the errors that were on the microfilm, in order to avoid destroying the integrity of the originals, where ever they may be.
