Will of Mary J. Gourley
from Newfoundland will books volume 13 pages 34-35 probate year 1924

In re
      MARY J. GOURLEY.     DECEASED.

This is the last Will and Testament of me Mary J. Gourley of St. John’s, in the Island of Newfoundland, Widow. I revoke all former Wills by me at any time made, and I appoint Thomas J. Buckley of St. John’s, Printer, Executor of this my Will. I will and direct that my said Executor shall as soon as possible, sell my freehold property on Pleasant Street, with the two tenement house thereon, numbered 77 and 77 ½ and that he shall out of the proceeds of such sale pay the following bequests, after deducting the sum of One hundred dollars for the purpose of erecting a headstone in my burial ground at Belvidere;

  • to my son Edward Gourley the sum of two hundred dollars,
  • to my son John Gourley the sum of one hundred dollars,
  • to my daughter-in-law Catherine Gourley the sum of fifty dollars,
  • to my grand-daughter Mary Margaret the sum of one hundred dollars,
  • to my grand-daughters Ada Coward and Winifred Coward, the sum of one hundred each,
  • to my grand-son Frederick Coward the sum of one hundred dollars,
  • to the Rev. Joseph Pippy, formerly of St. Patrick’s Parish, the sum of twenty dollars for masses for the repose of the souls of my husband and myself, and the further sum of one hundred dollars for his own use absolutely,
  • to such Priest of St. Patrick’s Church as my Executor may decide, the sum of twenty dollars for masses for the repose of the souls of my husband and myself, and to such other Priest of the said Church as my Executor may select, the sum of twenty dollars for the repose of the souls of my parents Edward and Louise Power,
  • to the Holy League of the Sacred Heart of St. Patrick’s Church the sum of twenty five dollars;
  • to the St. Patrick’s Church Restoration and Upkeep the sum of one hundred dollars,
  • and to Patrick Albert Buckley the son of my said Executor the sum of twenty five dollars,
  • to Christina Buckley, daughter of my said Executor, the sum of twenty five dollars,
  • and to Ecclesiastical Students Fund in the Arch-Diocese of St. John’s, the balance of any money then remaining from such sale.

All the rest and residue of my estate of any kind whatsoever not hereinbefore bequeathed in this my Will, I give and bequeath to my son Edward Gourley.
Witness my hand at St. John’s this twenty ninth day of August 1919.

Signed Published and Declared by the Testatrix as and for her last Will and testament in the presence of us who in her presence and at her request, and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as witnesses.

      This is a Codicil to the last Will and Testament of me, Mary J. Gourley, of St. John’s, Widow. I revoke the bequest of One hundred dollars made therein to Rev. Joseph Pippy and bequeath the said amount to my son Edward Gourley, in addition to the Two hundred dollars already mentioned for him. I bequeath my burial plot at Belvidere to my daughter Margaret Coward. I also leave her the wardrobe in my bedroom. In witness whereof I have hereunto set my hand at St. John’s aforesaid this Second day of October, A.D. 1922.

Signed Published and Declared by the said Testatrix as and for a Codicil to her last Will and testament in the presence of us who in her presence and at her request and in the presence of each other have hereunto subscribed our names attesting the due execution hereof.
