Will of Rebecca Flood, Sister Mary Joseph Francis,
In the name of God Amen, I Rebecca Flood in religion known as Sister Joseph Francis, nun in the Presentation Convent of Riverhead, St. John’s Newfoundland, do hereby make my last will and testament.
First I give and bequeath unto the Reverend Mother of the Presentation Convent at Riverhead aforesaid the yearly sum or annuity arising and due unto me out of the house on Duckworth Street belonging to the estate of the late John Little Esq and held by him under assignment of his leasehold interest by Mr. Ward who claimed under original lease from executors of my father. The amount of said yearly sum is twelve pounds five shillings payable half yearly by the executors of the late John Little.
Secondly I will and bequeath that after the expiration of the nineteen years which are yet unexpired of the said late John Little’s interest in said land and premises my part and share thereof together with the house built thereon and all its rents issues and profits go to and become the free and absolute property of the Reverend Mother of the Presentation Convent or her successor and to be equally with the yearly sum above bequeathed during the term yet unexpired expended and laid out by the said Reverend Mother and her successor and successors for ever in any manner that to her or them may seem proper for the uses and purposes of the Convent aforesaid. I hereby constitute and appoint the Reverend John Ryan at present of Riverhead, St. John’s, as executor of this my last will and testament.
Rebecca (Mary Joseph F.) Flood. Signed sealed and declared as and for her last will and testament by the said Rebecca Flood in the presence of us who in her presence and in the presence of each other have signed our names hereto as attesting witnesses on the twenty third of December A.D. 1872, R. Raftus, Catherine Jackman.
Codicil The following is a codicil to my last will and testament hereto attached. In addition to the bequests already made in said will to the Reverend Mother of the Presentation Convent River Head and her successors I furthur will and bequeath unto her all the rest and residue of my estate property and monies whatsoever to which I am or shall be in any way entitled for the purposes already declared in my said last will. I also will that three Masses be celebrated for the repose of my soul.
Note: The wills in those will books are NOT actual wills. They are either hand-written copies or in later years typed copies of a, "last will and testament," written or typed by the court clerk, after the death of the testator, when the executor presented them to the court for probate. The court clerk didn't list the signatures at the bottom, he (or she) just put them in the book in whatever order they were in, on the original document, no spacing most of the time, no punctuation. The originals were kept by the executor.
We who have typed these wills, have made every effort to include all the errors that were on the microfilm, in order to avoid destroying the integrity of the originals, where ever they may be.
