Be it Remembered That on this Fourteenth day of December in the Fifty second Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Queen, Defender of the Faith, &c, and in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Eighty-eight personally appeared William Griffiths of St John's in the Central District of Newfoundland, laborer, Thomas Allen of the same place Grocer and Egbert Warren of same place Grocer, and did acknowledge themselves to be held and firmly bound to our said Lady the Queen, Her Heirs and Successors, in the penal Sum of three thousand Dollars to be had, made and levied on his Goods, Chattels and Effects, jointly and severally, if Default is made in any of the conditions following :

Now the Condition of this Obligation is such, that if the above bounden William Griffiths as Administrator cum tentamento annexo of the Estate and Effects of William Griffiths late of St. Johns aforesaid, Fisherman deceased, do make or cause to be made, a just, true, and perfect inventory of all and singular the Goods, Credits and Effects of the said deceased, which have or shall come to the hands, possession, or knowledge of him the said William Griffiths as such Administrator or to the hands or possession of any other person or persons, for him and the same so made do exhibit, or cause to be exhibited, in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, at or before the 14th day of June next ensuing the date hereof; and the said Goods, Chattels, Credits and Effects, and all other the Goods, Chattels, Credits and Effects of the said deceased, at the time of his death, or which at any time afterwards shall come into the hands or possession of him the said William Griffiths or to the hands or possession of any other person or persons for him shall well and truly administer according to Law, and further shall make, or cause to be made, a just and true account of his said Administration, on or before the 14th day of December which will be in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and Eighty-nine and afterwards from time to time as shall be lawfully required. And all the rest, residue, and remainder of the said Goods, Chattels, Credits and Effects, which shall be found remaining upon the said Administration Account, the same being examined and allowed by the said Supreme Court of Newfoundland, shall and do pay and dispose of in due course of Administration, or in such a manner as the said Court shall direct; then this obligation to be void and of no effect, or else to be and remain in full force and virtue.

ST. JOHN'S            }I do swear that I believe that William Griffiths late
Saint Johns To Wit }in the Central District of Newfoundland, fisherman deceased, died with a will, and that I will well and truly administer all and every the Goods of the said deceased and pay his debts, so far as his Goods will extend: and that I will exhibit a true, full and perfect Inventory of the said Goods of the deceased, and render a true account of my Administration into the Registry of the said Court, within six months from the date hereof, or when I shall be thereunto lawfully required; and that the whole of the Goods, Rights, Chattels, Assets, Credits and Effects of the said deceased which he died possessed of, within the jurisdiction of this Court, do not, according to the best of my knowledge, judgment and belief, amount to the value of one thousand five hundred dollars.

The Will of William Griffiths, made this thirtieth Day of July in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and sixty-four.

I William Griffiths, do hereby bequeath all my property, consisting of Lands, House, Household furniture, and all other whatsoever in the following manner, viz.
First: I bequeath the House ????? in which I live, and the land taken on lease from William Leight Anthony situated on Logy Bank Road to my youngest son William Griffiths.

Second: The Remainder of the Landed Property, I bequeath to my two sons Richard and Alexander, to be divided equally between them. The said Richard and Alexander Griffiths being required and bound to leave a road from their portion to that leased by Me, William Griffiths, from William Leight Anthony. The breadth of the said road to be ten feet. Moreover, the said Richard and Alexander Griffiths shall be bound ?????? out of this portion of the Property allotted to them, to give to each of my grand children, viz George Robert Griffiths, Joseph Perfect, and William John Ford a piece of land twenty five feet by fifteen feet, to the north of the House I now reside in, with the right of ingress and egress to and from the public road.

It is my further Will that the whole of my Property remain in status quo during the life of my wife Mary Griffiths, and that the said Mary Griffiths have full right to, and possession of, the same until her death, and after her decease all my portable property shall become the property of my youngest son William Griffiths.
Furthermore; I do hereby appoint Mr. William Blackler ??? and Mr. Thomas Wittycombe of St. Johns Newfoundland to be the Executors of this my last will and testament and that this Will do remain in the hands of the Reverend Charles ? Medley during the remainder of my life.

St. Johns to wit }Donald Morison of Saint Johns Solicitor saith that the Reverend Charles S. Medley whose name appears to the Will of Said deceased as one of the Subscribing Witnesses left Newfoundland many years ago. That the other Subscribing Witness Thomas Woods formerly of Saint Johns, School ??? died there several years ago. That deponent was well acquainted with the said Thomas Woods and with his handwriting, and Verily believes that the Signature Thos Woods, subscribed to the Said Will is of the true and proper handwriting of the said Thomas Woods

That deponent has not intermeddled in any way in the affairs of the Estate of Said deceased and is desirous of renouncing and does hereby renounce his said office of Executor

The Petition of William Griffiths of Saint Johns, Labourer

Humbly Sheweth

          That William Griffiths late of Saint Johns aforesaid Fisherman died there about twenty-four years ago having previously made and executed his last Will and Testament which is hereto annexed of which he appointed Thomas Withycombe and William Blackler both of Saint Johns Executors
          That the said Thomas Withycombe is at present absent from Saint Johns and the said William Blackler has renounced his office of Executor
          That said William Griffiths deceased left him surviving his widow Mary Griffiths who died in the month of October last, four sons namely Richard, Alexander and your petitioner residing at Saint Johns and John residing at Chelsea in Massachusetts and two daughters Hannah Reid and Rebecca Ford both residing at Saint Johns.
          That said deceased at the time of his death was possessed of

of property of the probable value of one thousand four hundred dollars.
          That no probate of any will nor administration of the Estate of Said deceased has been granted to any person.
          Petitioner therefore prays that administration of the Estate of said deceased with the said will annexed may be granted to petitioner.
          And as in duty bound he will ever pray &c
