Inventory & Petition
To the Honorable the Supreme Court or to anyone of the Honorable the Judges thereof.
The petition of Thomas Blanchard of Grand River, Codroy, Farmer.
Humbly Sheweth
- That on or about the 12day [sic] of March last past the schooner United Brothers with Edward Blanchard and others on board left Channel, Newfoundland for Grand River, Codroy, a distance of twenty or thirty miles.
- The said schooner was at the time bound to Grand River to load supplies for the seal fishery and was very lightly laden and provisioned for not more than three or four days.
- On the evening of the said 12th day of March a schooner supposed to be the said schooner United Brothers appeared off Grand River aforesaid and anchored a short distance outside the mouth of the river, apparently awaiting a favorable tide to enter the said river.
- During the said evening and whilst the said schooner was so anchored outside the mouth of the river, as aforesaid, a fierce storm arose and the said schooner was driven off from the land thereby and disappeared and neither the said schooner nor the said Edward Blanchard nor any others of the crew of the said schooner have since been seen or heard of as far as your petitioner can ascertain.
- That your petitioner believes that the said Edward Blanchard is now deceased.
- That the said Edward Blanchard left no will but was at the time of his said disappearance possessed of property within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court of the probable value of $1000.
- That the said Edward Blanchard was never married and left surviving him as next of kin four brothers and three sisters all of whom are minors except your petitioner.
- The said minors are assenting parties to this application as appears
Page 2
appears by the paper writing signed by them and hereunto annexed and
marked A.
- That no probate or administration has been granted to the estate of the said Edward Blanchard as far as your petitioner is aware nor has any person applied for same.
Your petitioner therefore prays that your Honorable Court or your
Lordship shall be pleased to grant unto him letters of administration to the
said estate of the said Edward Blanchard.
And as in duty bound he will ever pray etc, etc.
