NEWFOUNDLAND
St. Johns To Wit          I Jesse Targett of St. Johns, Widow, do swear that I believe that Charles Targett late of St. Johns, Sergeant of Police, deceased, died without a Will; and that I will well and truly administer all and every the Goods of the said deceased and pay his debts, so far as his goods will extend: and that I will exhibit a true, full and perfect Inventory of the said Goods of the deceased, and render a true account of my Administration into the Registry of the said Court, within six months from the date hereof, or when I shall be thereunto lawfully required; and that the whole of the Goods, Rights, Chattels, Assets, Credits and Effects of the said deceased of which he died possessed, within the jurisdiction of this Court, do not, according to the best of my knowledge, judgment and belief, amount to the value of seven hundred dollars.

So help me God

N O T I C E

Three days from the date hereof application will be made to the Honorable the Supreme Court or to one of the Honorable the Judges thereof for letters of administration to the Estate of Charles Targett late of St. Johns, Sergeant of Police, to be granted to Jessie Targett, Widow of deceased.
          Dated at Saint Johns this 24th day of April A.D. 1900

To the Honourable the Supreme Court of Newfoundland or to one of the Honourable the Judges thereof.

The Petition of Jessie Targett of Saint Johns in the Island, aforesaid, Widow,

Humbly Sheweth, that

  1. Your petitioner's husband, Charles Targett, late of Saint Johns in the Island aforesaid, Sergeant of Police, died at that place, intestate, on or about the 9th of April, instant.
  2. The said Charles Targett left him surviving your petitioner and one daughter, Ida Beatrice Targett
  3. That at the time of his death, the said Charles Targett was possessed of property of the probable value of seven hundred dollars.
  4. No administration to the Estate of the said Charles Targett has been granted forth of this Honourable Court to anyone.

Your Petitioner therefore prays that Letters of Administration to the Estate of the said late Charles Targett may be granted to her.
          And as in duty bound your Petitioner will ever pray &c &c

Be it Remembered That on this 26th day of April in the 63rd Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Queen, Defender of the Faith, &c, and in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Nine Hundred personally appeared Jessie Targett, of St. Johns, Widow, Corbett Pittman of St. Johns, Accountant and Robert K. Bishop of St. Johns, Merchant and did acknowledge themselves to be held and firmly bound to our said Sovereign Lady the Queen, Her Heirs and Successors, in the penal Sum of $1400.00 to be had, made and levied on his Goods, Chattels and Effects, jointly and severally, if Default is made in any of the conditions following :---

Now the Condition of this Obligation is such, that if the above bounden Jessie Targett as Administratrix of the Estate and Effects of Charles Targett, late of St. Johns, aforesaid, deceased, do make or cause to be made, a just, true, and perfect inventory of all and singular the Goods, Credits and Effects of the said deceased, which have or shall come to the hands, possession, or knowledge of her the said Jessie Targett as such Administratrix or to the hands or possession of any other person, or persons, for her and the same so made do exhibit, or cause to be exhibited, in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, at or before the 26th day of October next ensuing the date hereof; and the said Goods, Chattels, Credits and Effects, and all other the Goods, Chattels, Credits and Effects of the said deceased, at the time of his death, or which at any time afterwards shall come into the hands or possession of her the said Jessie Targett or to the hands or possession of any other person or persons for her shall well and truly administer according to Law, and further shall make, or cause to be made, a just and true account of her said Administration, on or before the 26th day of April which will be in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand nine hundred and one, and afterwards from time to time as she shall be lawfully required. And all the rest, residue, and remainder of the said Goods, Chattels, Credits and Effects, which shall be found remaining upon the said Administration Account, the same being examined and allowed by the said Supreme Court of Newfoundland, shall and do pay and dispose of in due course of Administration, or in such a manner as the said Court shall direct; then this obligation to be void and of no effect, or else to be and remain in full force and virtue.

We, Corbett Pittman of St. Johns, in the Central District of Newfoundland and Robert K. Bishop of same place aforesaid, Merchant,
That we are the proposed sureties on behalf of the intended administratrix of the property of Charles Targett late of St. Johns, Sergeant of Police deceased, in the within bond named, for the faithful administration of the said estate and effects, of the said deceased; and I the said Corbett Pittman of St. Johns in the Central District, make oath and say that I reside in St. Johns and am worth property to the amount of Fourteen hundred dollars, over and above all incumbrances and over and above what will pay my just debts, and every other sum for which I am now bail, or for which I am liable as surety or endorser or otherwise, and I the said Robert K. Bishop for myself, make oath and say, that I am worth property to the amount of Fourteen hundred dollars, over and above what will pay my just debts, and every other sum for which I am now bail and for which I am liable as surety or endorser or otherwise.
