??????          I Edward Skeans???? ???? Bell Beach Conception Bay but previously of St. Johns Fisherman do swear that I believe that Thomas Skeans of Belle Isle Beach aforesaid deceased, died with a Will; and that I will well and truly administer all and every the Goods of the said deceased and pay his debts, so far as his Goods will extend: and that I will exhibit a true, full and perfect Inventory of the said Goods of the deceased, and render a true account of my Administration into the Registry of the said Court, within six months from the date hereof, or when I shall be thereunto lawfully required; and that the whole of the Goods, Rights, Chattels, Assets, Credits and Effects of the said deceased of which he died possessed, within the jurisdiction of this Court, do not, according to the best of my knowledge, judgment and belief, amount to the value of four hundred and fifty dollars.

In the matter of the Estate of Edward Skeans (Some confusion of names of deceased and administrator of will) late of Belle Isle in Conception Bay fisherman deceased
                    and
In the matter of the petition of Thomas Skeans to be appointed the administrator thereof.
          I Augustus O. Hayward of St. Johns in the Island of Newfoundland solicitor make oath and say :-

  1. I am a solicitor of this Supreme Court and have been retained by Thomas Skeans of Belle Isle aforesaid to obtain administration to the Estate of Edward Skeans deceased.
  2. I know the property referred to in this petition of Thomas Skeans and of my knowledge can say that it does not exceed in value the sum of four hundred dollars.
  3. I prepared the petition aforesaid. The words "probable value" were intended to mean that the estate was less in value than the said sum of four hundred dollars.

Be it Remembered That on this 21st day of July in the 63rd Year of the Reign of our Sovereign Lady Victoria, by the Grace of God of the United Kingdom of Great Britain and Ireland, Queen, Defender of the Faith, &c, and in the Year of our Lord One Thousand Eight Hundred and ninety nine

Personally appeared Edward Skeans of Belle Isle farmer, John Thorpe of same place farmer and Timothy Keough of same place farmer and did acknowledge themselves to be held and firmly bound to our said Sovereign Lady the Queen, Her Heirs and Successors, in the penal Sum of eight hundred [sic] to be had, made and levied on his Goods, Chattels and Effects, jointly and severally, if Default is made in any of the conditions following :---

Now the Condition of this Obligation is such, that if the above bounden Edward Skeans as Administrator cum testamento annexo of the Estate and Effects of Thomas Skeans deceased late of Bell [sic] Isle farmer deceased, do make or cause to be made, a just, true, and perfect inventory of all and singular the Goods, Credits and Effects of the said deceased, which have or shall come to the hands, possession, or knowledge of him the said Edward Skeans as such Administrator or to the hands or possession of any other person, or persons, for him and the same so made do exhibit, or cause to be exhibited, in the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, at or before the 21st day of January next ensuing the date hereof; and the said Goods, Chattels, Credits and Effects, and all other the Goods, Chattels, Credits and Effects of the said deceased, at the time of his death, or which at any time afterwards shall come into the hands or possession of him the said Edward Skeans or to the hands or possession of any other person or persons for him shall well and truly administer according to Law, and further shall make, or cause to be made, a just and true account of his said Administration, on or before the 21st day of July which will be in the Year of Our Lord One Thousand nine hundred and afterwards from time to time as he shall be lawfully required. And all the rest, residue, and remainder of the said Goods, Chattels, Credits and Effects, which shall be found remaining upon the said Administration Account, the same being examined and allowed by the said Supreme Court of Newfoundland, shall and do pay and dispose of in due course of Administration, or in such a manner as the said Court shall direct; then this obligation to be void and of no effect, or else to be and remain in full force and virtue.

I give devise and bequeath to my wife Margarett Skeans my house Cattle and land till after her death and then ??? all is for my sone [sic] Edward Skeans Onely [sic]

Robert Skeans is to get a Calf.

St. John's   To Wit
I Thomas Norman of Belle Isle Beach, Conception Bay, Fisherman make oath and say that on the Fourth day of March A.D. one thousand eight hundred and ninety four at Belle Isle Beach aforesaid, I was present and did see Thomas Skeans late of Belle Isle Beach aforesaid. Fisherman, the Testator named in the paper writing hereunto annexed, duly sign (by making his mark) publish and declare the said annexed paper writing as and for his last Will and Testament, in my presence and in the presence of John Norman, the other subscribing witness thereto. That I and said John Norman then and there signed our names to such Will as such witnesses, in the presence of the said Testator and of each other. That previously to the said Will being so signed as aforesaid, by the said Testator and the said witnesses, it was read over and approved of by the said Testator in the presence of me and the said John Norman and that at the time of the said execution of the said Will the said Testator was of sound and disposing mind, memory and understanding, to the best of Deponent's knowledge and belief.

          The Petition of Edward Skeans of Belle Isle Beach, Conception Bay, Fisherman,

Humbly Sheweth

          That Thomas Skeans of said Belle Island Beach died in the month of March A.D. one thousand eight hundred and eighty four, leaving him surviving his Widow Margaret Skeans and five sons, viz; William, John, Edward (your Petitioner) Robert, Joseph, and Henry, and Francis living in Bonne Bay.
          That the said deceased left a will which has been proven in due form of law on the affidavit of Thomas Norman, one of the subscribing Witnesses thereto, which said Will and affidavit are hereto annexed marked A and B respectively.
          That at the time of the death of said Thomas Skeans he was possessed of a Dwelling

House, land and effects of the probable value of four Hundred Dollars
          That no Probate or administration has as yet been taken out to said Estate.
          Your Petitioner therefore prays that Administration with the Will annexed of said Thomas Skeans deceased, may be granted to him, and as in duty bound he will ever pray.
