The Petition of Ellen Sopp of Saint Johns in the Central District Widow

Humbly Sheweth

That William Sopp late of Saint Johns aforesaid Master Mariner deceased sailed from St. Martin's on or about the 18th day of August A.D. 1893 in the British Barque, Ethel, bound on a voyage to Saint Johns Newfoundland and has not since been heard of.
Your Petitioner verily believes that the said William Sopp was with the said Barque "Ethel" and her crew, lost at sea on or about the 22nd day of August A.D. 1893.
That said William Sopp died intestate and left him surviving his Widow, your Petitioner, and two daughters, namely, Mary Ellen (in religion ??? Margaret Mary) and Annie both of full age.

That said deceased at the time of his death was possessed of property within the jurisdiction of this Honorable Court of the probable value of Two thousand dollars.
That no Probate of any Will nor Administration to the Estate of said deceased has heretofore been applied for by, or granted to, any person.
Your Petitioner therefore prays that Letters of Administration to the Estate of Said deceased may be granted to her.
And as in duty bound she will ever pray &c.
