AFFIDAVIT.
----------

You shall swear that you believe this to be the true lasta just and true statement of the contents of the Will and Testament of Harriet Chafe, late of the Gould Bay Bulls Road, widow, deceased. You shall swear that you will pay all the Debts and Legacies of the Deceased, so far as the Goods shall extend and the Law shall bind you; and that you will exhibit a true, full and perfect Inventory of all and every the Goods, Rights and Credits of the deceased, together with a just and true account into the Registry of the Supreme Court of Newfoundland, when you shall be lawfully called thereto: And you shall further swear that the whole of the Goods, Rights, Chattels, Assets, Credits, and Effects of the said Harriet Chafe , deceased, and of which she died possessed, do not, according to the best of your knowledge, judgment and belief, amount to the value of Two Hundred and Fifty Dollars.

So help you God.

          I certify that the within written notice was duly posted up in the office of the Clerk of the Court on the day of the date thereof and has since that date remained so posted and further that no caveat or other objection has been entered thereto.

          The Petition of David M. Chafe of the Goulds, farmer

Humbly Sheweth

          That Harriet Chafe late of the Goulds, Bay Bulls Road, widow of the late Jacob Chafe, late of the Goulds aforesaid, farmer, deceased, died on or about the thirtieth day of May Anno Domini eighteen hundred and eighty six - having (as Petitioner is informed and verily believes) made and published her last Will and Testament.
          That the said Will was made in or about the month of July Anno Domini eighteen hundred and eighty five.
          Petitioner was referred? to the affidavit of Donald Morison hereto annexed.
          Your Petitioner verily believes that by her said Will the said Harriet Chafe appointed him Executor thereof.
          That the Estate of the said late Harriet Chafe at the time of her decease consisted of the sum of two hundred dollars. I am appearing in her name on deposit receipt of the Union Bank of Newfoundland.
          Your Petitioner humbly prays that the paper writing hereto annexed marked A  which is a copy of the Will as set out in the said affidavit of Donald Morison be admitted to probate as containing the last Will of the said Harriet Chafe and

your Petitioner be entrusted with the execution thereof and as in duty bound, petitioner will ever pray.

David Marshall Chafe of the Goulds, Bay Bulls Road, farmer, the Petitioner named in the above written petition maketh oath and saith that the matters and things therein contained are just and true to the best of this deponent's knowledge, information and belief and Deponent further saith that he verily believes that the contents of the paper writing A hereto annexed represents correctly the last Will and Testamaent of the said Harriet Chafe, deceased.

This is the last Will and Testament of me Harriet Chafe of the Goulds, widow of the late Jacob Chafe, deceased. I give devise and bequeath all my property estate and effects of every description to my son Emmanuel Chafe forever. I appoint David M. Chafe of the Goulds, farmer, sole executor of this my Will.

In the Matter of the
Estate of Harriet Chafe,
late of the Goulds,
Widow, deceased.

Newfoundland
Saint John's, To Wit
Donald Morison of Saint John's, Solicitor, maketh oath and saith that he was employed to
make the last Will and Testament of said Harriet Chafe deceased.
That deponent prepared the said Will and attended to the execution of same by said deceased. That the said Will was executed by the said deceased in the presence of this deponent and of another subscribing witness and that deponent and the said other witness then and there signed their names to such Will as said witnesses in the presence of the said Testatrix and of each other.
That at the time of the execution of the said paper writing the said Testatrix was of sound and disposing mind memory and understanding to the best of deponent's knowledge and belief. That upon the execution of said Will deponent at the request of said Testatrix took possession of the same for the purpose of keeping it until after the death of said Testatrix. That after the death of said Testatrix her son and sole legatee Emanuel Chafe call upon deponent for the said Will.
That deponent thereupon carefully searched for the said Will but has been unable to find the same up to this date. That deponent clearly remembers

the terms of the said Will and truly believes that the wording of it is to the following affect, that is to say - "This is the last Will and Testament of me Harriet Chafe of the Goulds, widow of the late Jacob Chafe deceased. I give devise and bequeath all my property estate and effects of every description to my son Emmanuel Chafe forever. I appoint David M Chafe of the Goulds, farmer, Sole Executor of this my Will.
Dated at the Goulds this          day of             A.D. 18    .
