To Wit }
I do swear that I believe that Elizabeth Shortis, late of Harbor Grace in the Northern District, Widow, deceased died without a Will; and that I will well and truly administer all and every the Goods of the said deceased, and pay her Debts so far as her Goods will extend; and that I will exhibit a true, full, and perfect Inventory of the Goods of the deceased, and render a true account of my Administration into the Registry of the said Court, within six months from the date hereof, or when I shall be thereunto lawfully required; and that the whole of the Goods, Rights, Chattels, Assets, Credits and Effects of the said deceased, which she died possessed of, within the jurisdiction of this Court, do not, according to the best of my knowledge, judgment and belief, amount to the value of Twelve Hundred dollars.

At the instance of Margaret Hartery of St. John's, Widow, claiming administration to the said Estate as one of the next of kin of the said Elizabeth Shortis
I do order that Henry F. Shortis of St. John's to shew cause, if any he have, why administration to the Estate and Effects of the said Elizabeth Shortis should not be granted to the said Margaret Hartery by filing in the Registrar's Office and serving on the said Margaret Hartery an answer containing the grounds on which he resists such grants on the 20th day of November instant at 11 o'clock. Otherwise the claim of the said Margaret Hartery will be taken to be admitted by him.

The answer of Henry F. Shortis shewing
cause to a ???????????? served upon
him to show cause why Letters of
Administration to the said Estate should
not be granted to Margaret Hartery of
St. John's, Widow.
The said Henry F. Shortis saith that he is the only surviving son of the said Elizabeth Shortis by her late husband Michael Shortis who died in the month of February A.D. 1877.
That the said Elizabeth Shortis had no property except that which she derived from her said husband Michael Shortis, deceased.
That this respondent believes that the said Margaret Hartery is a daughter of the said Elizabeth Shortis by a former husband and Powers.
That his respondent took out letters of Administration to

his said fathers Michael Shortis' Estate and the affairs of this said Estate have been wound up and closed by him.
That this respondent and his said mother lived together until July A.D. 1882 when he came to reside in St. John's up to which time Respondent paid the cost of the Dwelling House in which he and his mother resided.
That the said Margaret Hartery, Respondent believes was married about thirty years ago and since that time has been living apart from her mother.
That this Respondent further maintained the said Margaret Hartery from the date of his marriage with her mother until the said Margaret Hartery was married, a period of about twelve or fifteen years as Respondent is advised and believes.

This respondent prays that Letters of Administration to the said Estate of Elizabeth Shortis be granted to him upon his giving the usual security.

The Petition of Margaret Hartery of St. John's,
Widow,
Humbly Sheweth
That Petitioners mother, Elizabeth Shortis, wife of Michael Shortis, deceased, died at Harbor Grace or about the 8th day of November October A.D. 1888.
That deceased died intestate and left her surviving as next of kin one daughter-your Petitioner- and two sons Henry F. Shortis of St. John's and James Powers at present of Brockton, Boston, U.S.A.
That deceased was possessed of property at the time of her death of the probable value of One Thousand Dollars.
That neither Probate of any Will for Administration to the Estate and effects of deceased has as yet been granted to any one.
Your Petitioner therefore prays that Administration to the Estate and Effects of deceased may be granted to her as the eldest child of deceased now resident in this country.
And as in duty bound she will ever pray.
