Will of Lambert Forward Dicks
from Newfoundland will books volume 6 pages 338-339 probate year 1897

Last Will and Testament of
Lambert F. Dicks of Sandwich Bay, Labrador
School teacher deceased.

      In the name of God Amen
This is the last will and Testament of me Lambert Forward Dicks of Burgeo, Burgeo and Lapoile Newfoundland. I hereby appoint Rory McRae J.P. of Harbour Grace Newfoundland and James Fraser Agent "Hr G" Cartwright Labrador to be my executors, and direct that all my past debts and testamentary expenses shall be paid as soon as they can conveniently do so after my decease.

Item 1. To my wife Phoebe. From money due to me from the "New York Mutual Life Insurance Company" I will and bequeath $400.00 to be payable in advance at the rate of $50.00 a year (In case of my wife marrying again the money shall cease to be paid her, and shall be left to accumulate in the Savings Bank for the benefit of my daughter Doris after she has completed her education, and in the event of Doris' decease the accumulated amount shall go to my brother George. But should my wife not marry again she shall receive the $50.00 a year regularly for eight years, and at the end of that time she shall receive the whole of the accumulated interest with the last $50.00

Item 2. I will and bequeath to my daughter Doris $200.00 which shall be deposited in the Savings Bank to accumulate until she be fourteen years old, when she may attend a school in St. John's and the accumulated amount spent upon her education. The executor Rory McRae is requested to appoint a Guardian for this purpose. In case of my daughter's death previous to this, the money must be immediately transferred to my sister Irene to use as seems best to her, and in the event of the decease of Irene the money shall come to my brother George.

Item 3. I will and bequeath $200.00 to my mother Jane Dicks.

Item 4. I leave $100.00 for debts, funeral expenses etc.

Item 5. The "Prospect" may be sold if necessary for what she will fetch and the money handed over to my wife Phoebe.

Item 6. All my books I bequeath to my daughter Doris and as many of them are quite valuable none must be lent, borrowed or in any way destroyed.

Item 7. My winchester repeating rifle I bequeath with patent reloading gear & all cartridges that are loaded at present to my brother George of Burgeo.

Item 8. I bequeath my new patent shot gun magazine repeater with all cartridges loaded and cleaning rod gear and case to my brother Louis of Burgeo

Item 9. All my skin clothes, sleeping bag & wooden pipes I will and bequeath to my father and brothers at home

Item 10. All my household effects with all such clothing of mine as may be found in any of my trunks or boxes of any value to my wife. I will and bequeath to her to do as she thinks best with, unless it be such a valuable coat or vest or any garment of special value for man. Such garments to be carefully packed and sent to my father and brothers.

Item 11 All my carpenters tools are to be carefully kept from rusting and none are to be given away, borrowed or lent; but if any person wishes to obtain any, let him come honorably and pay the price down, giving the value to my wife and such tools as he may require shall be his.

Item 12. I bequeath to Robert Learning my nephew of American Cove, my double barrel shot gun (the "Susanna") with all the gear belonging to her and all the caps except 500 for the new patent shot gun, also there are four boxes of caps belonging to the rifle which must be given with it. All other gun gear in a square wooden box and some in the tool chest belongs to the "Susanna" also cleaning rod & gear

In witness whereof I the said Lambert Forward Dicks have to this my last will and Testament set my hand the twelfth day of August the year one thousand eight hundred and ninety seven (sgd) Lambert Forward Dicks. Signed by the Testator and acknowledged by him to be his last will and Testament in the presence of us present at the same time who at his request in his presence and in the presence of each other have subscribed our names as witnesses. August 12th 1897. (Sgd) George Hall. (Sgd) W. H. Graham Aspland.

      I certify the foregoing to be a correct copy of the last will and Testament of Lambert F. Dicks deceased
