Last will and Testament
of Joseph Crowdy
of St. John's Gentleman Deceased
.

In the name of God Amen. This is the last will and testament of me Joseph Crowdy of St. John's Newfoundland and I hereby revoke all former wills by me made. I give devise and bequeath as follows: - 1. To the Diocesan Synod of Newfoundland in aid of the clergy sustentation Fund my five four-per-cent debentures numbered 258, 259, 260, 64, and 65. - 2. To the trustees for the benefit of the Church of England Orphanages one hundred dollars. 3. To the Colonial and Continental Church and School society sixty dollars. - 4. To the Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Animals sixty dollars 5. To the Dorcas Society St. John's $60.00 6. To the St. Vincent de Paul Society St. John's sixty dollars. 7. To my brother Colonel Crowdy four thousand eight hundred dollars. 8. To my sisters Henrietta M. Crowdy and Lucy C. Crowdy all my stock in the Bahia and Tumbo Branch Railway as tenants in common. 9. To my nephew Dr. Frederic H. Crowdy two thousand eight hundred and eighty dollars. - 10. To my nephew George J. Crowdy the sum in which he is now indebted to me which debt is hereby released. I also give devise and bequeath to him all my shares in the Montreal Gas Company. - 11. To my nephew William H. Crowdy eighteen shares in the Union Bank of Newfoundland and all my land at Topsail. 12. To my nephew Charles P. Crowdy all my shares in the Commercial Bank of Newfoundland and in the St. John's Gaslight Company. 13. To my niece Flora Crowdy two hundred dollars. 14. To my niece Elizabeth D. Crowdy my silver mustard pot and muffineer. - 15. To my niece Fanny J. Crowdy my gold chain. 16. To Fanny M. Johnson four hundred and eighty dollars. 17th. To George M. Johnston, Barrister, two hundred dollars and any two dozen of any books that he may select. - 18. To the Reverend C. H. Johnson two hundred dollars, also Scotts Commentary (4 volumes) and my large American bible. 19. To Mary Carter eighty dollars. - 20. To the domestics Mrs. Kielly, Bessy Byrne and Robert Croke sixty dollars each. - 21. To my sister-in-law Julia H. Crowdy my wearing apparel linen, and such like domestic effects, to be by her disposed of as she may deem best. - 22. As to the residue of my estate not above bequeathed, I give devise and bequeath the same as follows that is to say the annual income proceeds or profits thereof to the said Julia H. Crowdy for her life, and upon her decease the said residue shall be divided between my nieces Mary L. Bowen, Elizabeth S. Crowdy and Fanny J. Crowdy in equal parts share and share alike and in case either of my said nieces shall predecease me and shall leave children her share shall be divided amongst her children in equal parts share and share alike. I appoint my sister-in-law the said Julia H. Crowdy and my said nephew William H. Crowdy executrix and executor of this my will Dated at St. John's aforesaid this third day of October in the year of our Lord one thousand eight hundred and ninety one. Joseph Crowdy. Signed published and declared by the said Joseph Crowdy as and for his last will and testament in the presence of us the subscribers who in the presence of the said testator and of each other have hereunto subscribed our names as such witnesses on the date above written.
